Duke vs Georgia Tech Prediction: Blue Devils Stay Unbeaten
No. 23 Duke (4-0) visits Georgia Tech (1-3) at Bobby Dodd Stadium. The Blue Devils are unbeaten behind Manny Diaz's defense.
01The ground game
Duke brings the most productive rushing attack in the country to Atlanta. Running back Nate Sheppard leads the nation at 161.0 rushing yards per game (644 through four games), and the Blue Devils have outscored opponents 145-44.
Georgia Tech is 1-3 and still working through injuries and inconsistencies on both sides of the ball. Duke head coach Manny Diaz called the Yellow Jackets "a good team without a good record" this week, pointing to missing personnel on the offensive and defensive lines. A run-first team against a short-handed front is a bad matchup for the home side.
02Weather is a real factor
Hurricane Isaias is the story before kickoff. Forecasters expect heavy rain and 25-50 mph wind gusts in Atlanta through the afternoon, and Georgia Tech Athletics confirmed Friday the game will be played as scheduled. Rain and gusts shrink every passing playbook.
That plays to Duke's strength. A wet field and a slippery ball favor the team that can run it downhill - and nobody runs it better than Sheppard. Starting QB Walker Eget gets another week to settle in with his receivers, but conditions may limit how much of the passing game either team can use.
03The series problem
Georgia Tech has won five straight meetings with Duke, including a 27-18 win last season. This is the 93rd meeting between two of the ACC's longest-standing rivals.
Duke is also in unfamiliar territory: this is the program's first game as a ranked team since October 2023. The Blue Devils have won eight straight games overall and six straight ACC road games - but none of those came as a ranked road favorite in a storm.
04Line context
Duke is laying 6.5 points on the road, a line confirmed at multiple books. The number reflects the records: 4-0 against 1-3.
One caution on the resume: Duke's 145-44 scoring margin is inflated by the 62-7 win over William & Mary. The other three wins were tighter. Books are also split on the total, ranging from 44.5 to 48.5 - a sign that even oddsmakers are guessing about what Isaias does to scoring.
05The pick
Our pick: Duke -6.5.
The better roster, the nation's top ground game, and weather that shrinks the playbook to exactly what Duke does best. Georgia Tech's injuries and the 1-3 record are real. The five-game series streak is the warning flag - rivalries break formulas - but Duke's rushing edge plus the storm is enough to lay the points.
Duke 24, Georgia Tech 17.
Duke is 4-0 and ranked. Georgia Tech is 1-3. The Blue Devils are the better team on both sides of the ball.
