Parlay Betting Strategy: When Parlays Make Sense
Parlays offer big payouts but the math is brutal. Learn when parlays are smart and when to avoid them.
01How Parlays Work
A parlay combines multiple bets into one. All legs must win for the parlay to cash. A 2-leg parlay at -110 each pays about 2.6-to-1. A 3-leg parlay pays about 6-to-1.
The payout grows exponentially, but so does the difficulty. Each additional leg multiplies the probability of losing.
02The Math Against You
A 2-leg parlay at -110 each has a true probability of about 27.8% (0.524 x 0.524), but pays only 2.6-to-1 (implied 27.8%). The sportsbook keeps the same margin on parlays as straight bets, compounded across legs.
The more legs you add, the worse the expected value gets relative to betting each game individually.
03When Parlays Make Sense
Correlated parlays - where one leg winning makes another more likely - can offer value. For example, betting a favorite and the over in a game they are expected to dominate.
Small fun parlays for entertainment are fine if you treat them as lottery tickets, not investments. Never make parlays your primary betting strategy.
04Parlay Strategy Tips
Keep parlays to 2-3 legs. The payout is still meaningful and the hit rate is manageable. Avoid 10-leg lottery tickets - the true odds are astronomical.
Consider round robins if you like multiple teams: they create smaller parlays from your selections, so you can still profit if one leg loses.
