01The race through Week 6

Jeremiah Smith is the odds-on favorite, and the gap is the story. The Ohio State receiver separated from the field with back-to-back 200-yard receiving games against Illinois and Iowa, then caught multiple touchdowns for a third straight game against Maryland. At -210 the market is pricing him as more likely than not, in a race that usually stays crowded into November.

Behind him it is quarterbacks all the way down. Miami's Darian Mensah and Notre Dame's CJ Carr are the only other players shorter than +1300, and both play in ranked games most weeks, which is what Heisman voters actually watch. Georgia's Gunner Stockton is the riser: his price shortened after Georgia went on the road and beat Alabama in the season's biggest game so far.

02Watch them in our coverage this week

Three contenders play in games we have already published picks for on Saturday, October 17. Smith and Ohio State visit Indiana, whose own Josh Hoover is on the board at +5500. Mensah and Miami host Florida State, and Carr leads Notre Dame at BYU. A contender's price after this weekend will say more than any September stat line.

03How to bet the Heisman, honestly

A futures bet ties your money up until the award is announced in December, so the price has to compensate you for both the risk and the wait. A -210 favorite sounds safe and still loses plenty of these: -210 implies a 67.7% chance, which means the field wins this bet roughly one time in three even when the favorite looks inevitable in October.

The value, when it exists, is usually in the second tier: quarterbacks on ranked teams with marquee games still ahead of them, because one huge Saturday in a spotlight game reprices a +1200 ticket faster than any other bet in the sport. What never works is scattering small bets across ten names. The book's margin on a futures board is built from exactly that habit.
