The women's season opens at The Barn with No. 17 Minnesota hosting a Harvard team that won 20 games last season, brings back its two leading scorers, and defended like a top-20 team in the country. Minnesota is deeper and at home, but openers rarely run to script, and Harvard almost never makes anything easy.

The Matchup

Minnesota opens its season at The Barn on Monday night with Harvard in town, and the market has made it a mismatch: the Gophers are favored by 14.5 points, the total is 128.5, and Minnesota is -1,000 on the moneyline. Both teams are 0-0, so last season is the starting point, and it says Minnesota was the better team without saying it was two touchdowns better.

The Gophers finished 24-9, scoring 74.1 points per game and allowing 58.8. Harvard finished 20-12, scoring 65.3 and allowing 56.7, the stingier defense of the two. Those are last season's numbers, and both rosters look different now, but the returning cores are real on both sides.

Harvard's two best players are back. Senior guard Karlee White averaged 15.0 points and 4.9 rebounds last season, shot 51.8 percent from the field, and started every game she played. Senior forward Abigail Wright averaged 13.3 points and 6.3 rebounds while starting all 32 games. White also came away with 61 steals, and she and Wright carry no injury designations for Monday.

Harvard returns 13 players from last season's roster, the most in the Ivy League, so the Crimson's defensive habits travel with them to Minneapolis. This is not a rebuilding underdog being fed to a ranked team. It is a veteran team that defends in the half court and has two seniors who have scored in big road games before.

Minnesota's edge is balance. Grace Grocholski averaged 12.1 points per game last season, and Mara Braun averaged 11.7 in her first full season back from a foot injury, and both carry no injury designations for Monday. The Gophers play this season without Tori McKinney, who led them at 12.7 points per game last season.

McKinney suffered a season-ending knee injury in practice in October, announced by head coach Dawn Plitzuweit, so Minnesota has to replace its leading scorer from opening night onward. The Gophers shared the ball and took care of it, turning it over just 10.9 times a game, and at home, on the raised floor that visiting shooters have disliked for decades, that depth is why Minnesota is favored. The question is only the size of it.

Key Factors

Start with the defenses, because both of them push this game toward a grind. Harvard allowed 56.7 points per game last season and Minnesota allowed 58.8, and the total of 128.5 already expects a slower, lower-scoring night. Grinds are the underdog's friend when the spread is this big. Every empty possession is a possession where Minnesota cannot build the margin, and Harvard's half-court defense forces a lot of them, with White and her 2.3 steals a game at the top of it.

The honest counterpoint is Harvard's own ballhandling. The Crimson turned it over 15.6 times a game last season, Minnesota only 10.9, and Braun pressures the ball at the top of the Gophers defense. Live-ball turnovers at The Barn become runouts, and runouts are how a good home team turns a nine-point lead into a twenty-point lead in four minutes.

Harvard also has to score enough to matter, and 65.3 points a game against a defense this good is a real concern. If White picks up two early fouls, Harvard's offense loses the player it runs through, and the Crimson do not have a second guard who bends a defense the same way.

That foul point cuts at Minnesota too, and sharper than it would have a month ago. With McKinney already out for the season, Minnesota's scoring is spread across Grocholski and Braun, so one of them sitting with foul trouble leaves the Gophers short of a proven third option. Harvard leans on White and Wright for more than 28 points a game between them, so the Crimson's cover likely depends on both of them playing heavy minutes.

But a season opener is also when a favorite is shortest on answers. Legs are heavy, shooting is rusty, and a veteran team that defends this well is exactly the kind of visitor that keeps an opener uncomfortable into the final minutes. Minnesota should win. Winning by 15 or more against this defense, in the first game of the season, is a different ask.

Our Pick
Harvard Crimson +14.5 (-110)

Season openers at The Barn are loud, slow starters, and this one pairs two defenses that made every possession a chore last season. Harvard is a veteran team that defends in the half court and brings its two best scorers into a building where favorites have to earn separation the hard way. Minnesota is the better team and should win the game, but this is a lot of points to lay in an opener against a defense this stubborn. Take the points with Harvard Crimson +14.5 at -110.
