AP No. 9 UCLA is 6-0 behind a ground game with 21 rushing touchdowns, hosting a 2-5 Michigan State team that scores 21.3 points per game. The Bruins lay 14 at the Rose Bowl.

01The Matchup

AP No. 9 UCLA in the AP Top 25 is unbeaten at 6-0 and wins games in the trenches: the Bruins rush for 231.0 yards per game at 5.6 yards per carry, have scored 21 rushing touchdowns against only 5 passing touchdowns, and allow just 16.2 points per game. Running back Anthony Woods led UCLA's rushing in its last outing, and a defense with 10 interceptions waits for the mistakes its ground game forces opponents to chase.

Michigan State is 2-5 and struggling to score, at 21.3 points per game with 191.6 passing yards and 119.1 rushing yards per game at a thin 3.3 per carry. Quarterback Alessio Milivojevic led the Spartans' passing last week, but this offense has no reliable way to move the ball against good defenses, and UCLA at the Rose Bowl is a good defense. The handicap question is whether the Bruins' slow, run-heavy style produces enough margin to clear two touchdowns.

02Key Factors

First, the rushing gap is the widest on the slate: UCLA at 231.0 yards per game and 5.6 per carry against Michigan State at 119.1 and 3.3. The Bruins can play the entire game on their terms, and a team that cannot stop the run cannot get its opponent off the field. Second, UCLA's defense creates the extra possessions a favorite needs: 10 interceptions against a Spartan offense that has scored 7 passing touchdowns all season and will have to throw from behind.

Third, the tempering factor is pace. A run-first favorite burns clock with its own offense, which shortens the game and caps the total possessions available to build a margin beyond 14. Michigan State allows 25.4 points per game, though, so UCLA does not need many possessions to reach the low 30s, and the Spartans' 21.3-point average includes softer opponents than this defense.

03The Pick

Take UCLA -14. Our numbers project the Bruins by 15, with a projected score of UCLA 30, Michigan State 15, a modest edge built on a total mismatch at the line of scrimmage. Laying two touchdowns with a run-first team always carries pace risk, but Michigan State brings the weakest offense on the ranked slate into the Rose Bowl, and UCLA's defense, allowing 16.2 points per game with 10 interceptions, is exactly the unit that turns a methodical lead into a comfortable one.

The Spartans have to throw to chase, and throwing is what they do worst. UCLA controls the clock, the field position and eventually the scoreboard, and clears the number at home.

OUR VERDICT
UCLA -14

UCLA runs for 231.0 YPG at 5.6 per carry against a 2-5 team scoring 21.3 PPG; our numbers project UCLA by 15.
