Orlando Magic at New York Knicks on Sunday. Both teams are 0-2. Differentials on a 50/50 split of the 2026-27 start and the 2025-26 final: Orlando -7.0, New York +0.7. Our data-driven pick: Orlando Magic +7.5.

01The Matchup

Madison Square Garden hosts a meeting of two 0-2 teams on Sunday night, and only one of them is being priced like a contender, which tells you how much of this line is last season's memory. That was the argument for taking the points here. It does not survive the injury report.

Paolo Banchero is out with an ankle sprain, expected back in late November, and he is not a replaceable part of Orlando's offense: he scored 35 in the opener against Atlanta, ran the half court through himself on nearly every trip, and his absence turns the Magic into a one-creator team. Franz Wagner is a genuine second star, but tonight he is the whole show, with Jonathan Isaac also out and backup guard Anthony Black a game-time decision.

New York's own start is nothing to brag about: 101.5 points per game scored and 106.5 allowed through two losses. Orlando has been worse at both ends, 109.0 scored and 123.5 allowed, and those defensive numbers were posted with Banchero on the floor for most of both games. Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns anchor a Knicks team that went 53-29 last season; Orlando was 45-37 with its star healthy. DraftKings makes New York -7.5 with a total of 224.5 and the Knicks -298 on the moneyline.

02Key Factors

The first factor is what Orlando's offense becomes without Banchero. With him, the Magic could manufacture a decent look late in the clock: he bent defenses, pulled help toward himself, and got to the line. Without him, the creation load falls to Wagner against a set defense that can load up on the one player it has to respect, and the next option is Tristan da Silva in a far bigger role than he has ever carried.

That is how underdogs die against big spreads: not by being blown off the floor early, but by going four and five empty trips at a time while the favorite builds the margin in ones and twos. Second, the Knicks' scoring drought needs context.

A team scoring 101.5 points per game usually cannot be trusted to win by eight, but droughts are shaped by the defenses that cause them, and Orlando has allowed 123.5 points per game, the softest defense on the Sunday slate, now without Isaac, its most versatile defender, as well. Brunson probing a defense with no deterrence behind its first line is a different assignment than the ones New York has faced so far.

Third, the honest counterpoint: the total is 224.5, the lowest on the slate, and low-possession games compress margins. If Wagner scores 30 and the Knicks shoot the way they have for two games, New York can win this game and still not cover. The bet is that Orlando's missing creator matters more than New York's missing rhythm, because the Magic no longer have a reliable way to answer a run. We make New York by double digits at home, clear of the 7.5 being charged.

Our Pick
New York Knicks -7.5 -110

Paolo Banchero is out, and Orlando's case went with him. He scored 35 in the opener and creates most of what the Magic run; without him, Franz Wagner is the only high-end creator against a set defense, and Orlando is still allowing 123.5 points a game. New York's offense has sputtered, but this is the defense it should wake up against. We make the Knicks by double digits at the Garden. Take New York Knicks -7.5 at -110.
