BYU vs Utah Prediction, Odds, Best Bets - Week 10

The Holy War rarely needs extra stakes, but this one has them anyway. No. 3 in the AP Top 25, Utah is 8-0 and protecting home field at Rice-Eccles Stadium. No. 7 BYU arrives at 7-1 with the passing game to make it a fight and a fresh loss that showed exactly how to attack the Cougars.
The Matchup
Utah's profile is the most complete in the Big 12 right now. The Utes score 38.9 points per game and allow 15.9, and the offense runs through Devon Dampier, who has thrown for 1,876 yards while defenses also have to account for the ground game behind him. Wayshawn Parker has rushed for 726 yards, and that balance is why Utah just hung 49 points on Cincinnati and won a 21-13 grind at Houston in the same three-week stretch.
Braden Pegan gives Dampier a reliable outlet with 505 receiving yards. BYU counters with the better pure passing numbers. Bear Bachmeier has thrown for 1,750 yards, Legend Glasker has 585 receiving yards, and LJ Martin has added 344 rushing yards for an offense scoring 32.4 points per game. The Cougars beat Notre Dame 28-24 and Arizona State 27-20, real wins against real opponents.
The concern is the game in between. BYU lost 39-31 at UCF, and that afternoon showed the crack in the armor: when the Cougars' defense, which allows 18.8 points per game, has to defend a full field against a balanced offense, the margin disappears. Utah's offense is more balanced and more ruthless than UCF's.
Key Factors
Home field at Rice-Eccles is not a small thing in this series, and Utah's defense is the best unit in the game. The Utes allow 15.9 points per game, and they have shown they can win both ways, in a shootout against Cincinnati and in a fistfight at Houston. BYU's counter is Bachmeier's ceiling.
If he plays his best game and Glasker wins his matchups early, the Cougars can force Utah to chase, and chasing is the one thing this Utes team has barely had to do at 8-0. The honest worry for Utah backers is that unbeaten teams in rivalry games carry the pressure, and BYU has nothing to lose. A loose Cougars team with a hot quarterback can absolutely win this outright.
But the situational math favors the home side: Utah is rested in its own routine, its run game with Parker shortens the night, and Dampier does not have to be spectacular, just steady, because the defense keeps every game inside one possession of control. BYU needs its best offensive game of the season against the best defense it has faced. Utah needs its normal game. That asymmetry is what the spread is really pricing, and it points to the home favorite.
Utah has the better defense, the stronger run game and the building, and those three things have decided this rivalry's recent chapters. BYU can score with anyone, but asking the Cougars to outscore the Utes in Salt Lake City for four quarters is a different assignment than doing it at home. Take Utah -5.5 at -110.
