Daniil Medvedev opens in Vienna on Wednesday, three days after winning the title in Almaty without dropping serve. Daniel Merida has not played in three weeks, and the last time he faced Medvedev, at Wimbledon, he took the first set and still went home in four.

The Matchup

Daniil Medvedev starts his Erste Bank Open on Wednesday morning at Wiener Stadthalle, and he starts it as the man in form. The world No. 5 and No. 3 seed is 51-18 this season, and he arrives off an indoor title in Almaty on Sunday, where he beat Nikoloz Basilashvili in a three-set final. Across the net is Daniel Merida, the world No. 42, unseeded, 44-21 this season across all levels, and playing his first match in three weeks.

Medvedev has won this tournament before, in 2022, and Vienna's indoor hard court suits the way he plays: deep returns, flat groundstrokes hit from corner to corner, and rallies that keep going until the other man misses. His last 10 matches are 8-2, every one of them on hard courts, and the only two losses in that run came against Novak Djokovic in a Beijing semifinal and Rafael Jodar in a Shanghai semifinal.

Merida's season turned in the summer. He reached the quarterfinals in Canada in August, beating Ugo Humbert, Alex Michelsen and Tallon Griekspoor, then won two rounds at the US Open, where he beat Andrey Rublev in four sets. His last match was a three-set loss to Botic van de Zandschulp in Shanghai on October 8.

The two have played once. At Wimbledon on July 1, Merida took the first set before Medvedev settled and won 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-2. Neither man carries an injury concern into Wednesday: Medvedev finished a full title week in Almaty on Sunday, and Merida is active after his three-week break from competition.

Key Factors

Medvedev's serve is the first problem Merida has to solve. It just carried him through a title in Almaty without being broken once, across four matches and a three-set final, and an indoor court only makes that serve harder to read. Merida has to hold to stay in this match, and his second serve is where the pressure lands: across his tour career he has won 48.6 percent of his second-serve points, and Medvedev returns from so deep that a short second ball comes straight back at his feet.

The surface split points the same way. Medvedev just went 4-0 indoors in Almaty, and his last-10 hard-court record is 8-2. Merida is 6-4 across his last 10 hard-court matches at tour level, his 2026 season leans on clay (23-9) and outdoor hard, and he has played one indoor match all year and lost it. Vienna asks him to find his indoor timing in his first match in 20 days, against a top-five player who spent last week playing indoors.

What beats this pick is the serve running the whole match. If Medvedev lands first serves the way he did in Almaty, Merida spends the morning returning from deep, the long rallies never start, and a 6-3, 6-3 cruise beats this number comfortably.

Merida has to make him play balls: hold his own serve often enough to keep the sets honest, extend the rallies past the first few shots, and turn this into a working match. He has done it to Medvedev before, taking the first set off him at Wimbledon, and Medvedev also carries a short turnaround of his own: a Sunday final in Kazakhstan, then a Wednesday morning start in Vienna.

Our Pick
Daniel Merida +3.5 games (+109)

The serve is real, and Merida may not break it once. The fade is about the points Medvedev actually has to play. His form has run hot and cold, the stamina that used to make him so hard to beat in long rallies is not what it was, and when a rally stretches past the first few shots he is more willing than he used to be to let a point go instead of grinding it out. Merida has already taken a set off him this year, and he does not need to win this match: stay within three games of a favorite on a short turnaround and the ticket cashes in a loss. Take Daniel Merida +3.5 games at +109.
