An all-Italian second round in Vienna pairs the world No. 6 with the most feared serve in the bottom half of the draw. Flavio Cobolli is playing the best tennis of his life, and Matteo Berrettini, on an indoor hard court in a city where he has made a semifinal and three quarterfinals, has spent a career ruining weeks exactly like Cobolli's.

The Matchup

Cobolli arrives as the world No. 6 and the fourth seed, and his week already has a shape to it. He went to the Lyon semifinals indoors last week, beating Stan Wawrinka 6-2, 6-4 and Brandon Nakashima in three sets before Lorenzo Musetti came back to beat him in a third set after Cobolli had held four match points. On Tuesday in Vienna he beat Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in two hours and 15 minutes, his second three-set workout in four days.

Berrettini's path has been shorter. The former world No. 6 and Wimbledon finalist, now ranked No. 48, beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-3, 6-4 on Monday, a tidy win over the world No. 29 that took none of the energy out of his legs. His week in Lyon ended early, a 7-6, 7-5 loss to Kyrian Jacquet, a player ranked No. 85, and that result sits closer to his recent level: Berrettini has split his last 10 matches, and so has Cobolli, but Cobolli's wins have come against the stronger names.

The two Italians have not met this season. What separates them on paper is the ranking, 42 places of it, and what closes the gap is the surface and the building: Berrettini has made a semifinal and three quarterfinals in Vienna, and his serve on an indoor hard court is still one of the great equalizers in the sport.

No injury concern has been reported for either man this week. Cobolli finished the Dimitrov match at full strength, and Berrettini came through Monday moving well. Both play on a day's rest, with Cobolli's legs the heavier of the two after Lyon and Tuesday.

Key Factors

The serve is where Berrettini lives indoors. When his first serve lands, Cobolli is reduced to guessing in tiebreaks, and Vienna's court gives that serve its full value.

Cobolli's answer is the return position and the rally that follows: he takes the second serve early, he defends the corners Berrettini targets with his forehand, and he makes a player with a long injury history hit one more ball than he wants to hit. Over two hours, that pressure is what has been separating Cobolli's results from Berrettini's all autumn.

Berrettini's second serve is the pressure point. Cobolli steps in on it, and Berrettini's backhand side does not hold up the way his forehand does when he is pushed wide and low. If Cobolli breaks early in a set, the set tends to run away from Berrettini, because chasing a break back against a mover of Cobolli's speed costs him the cheap points his serve usually buys.

What beats this pick is the version of Berrettini Vienna has seen before: first serves landing in bunches, forehands struck through the court, and two tiebreaks that turn on one return each. Cobolli's game was built on clay, and his timing on this surface is still the thinner of the two when the ball starts rushing him.

If Berrettini serves him off the court in the first set, the match becomes a coin flip played on Berrettini's terms. Cobolli's current level says that is the less likely script: he is winning these weeks against top-30 opposition while Berrettini is still dropping matches to players outside the top 80.

Our Pick
Flavio Cobolli +0.5 games (-114)

Berrettini's serve can steal a set from anyone indoors, and Vienna has seen his best hard-court tennis for years. The rallies still belong to Cobolli: he is quicker into the corners, he takes the second serve early, and Berrettini has to hit through one of the best movers in the draw just to hold his own service games. Take Flavio Cobolli +0.5 games at -114.
