Hapoel Tel Aviv scored 118 points on Wednesday with their star guard in street clothes, and now they walk into a Dubai building where the hosts just gave up 99 to the team sitting near the bottom of the table. Dubai have the rest edge and the crowd. Hapoel have the deeper bench of shot makers, and that tension decides Friday in the desert.

The Matchup

What Hapoel did on Wednesday frames everything Dubai have to solve. Antonio Blakeney scored 35 points in 22 minutes against Efes, hitting eight threes, and he was not even the most complete performance on his own team. Elijah Bryant paired 16 points with a career high 12 assists and four steals, running the offense so cleanly that Hapoel finished with 21 assists against eight turnovers.

This is not a one man show that a defense can load up on. Daniel Oturu added 20 points inside, and when the starters rested, Eugene German and Bruno Caboclo kept the margin growing. Dubai cannot pick a poison here, because every option on the menu scored on Wednesday.

Dubai have real answers of their own, and they start in the frontcourt. Dwayne Bacon posted 24 points and 10 rebounds against Paris, and Mfiondu Kabengele went for 22 points and 13 rebounds in the same game, a pairing that can punish Hapoel on the glass and at the rim. The problem is the other end of the floor.

Dubai allow 85.4 points per game this season, and Paris just hung 99 on them in this building, with Nadir Hifi scoring 12 of his 20 points in the final five minutes. Head coach Xavi Pascual said it plainly after the loss: his team lost the game on defense, because scoring 93 at home has to be enough. Against the one offense in the league currently scoring more freely than Dubai, that leak is the whole matchup.

Availability shapes the guard battle, and it cuts in an unusual direction. Micic is doubtful for Hapoel with an ankle injury, per the Basketball Sphere injury report updated October 29. He did not play against Efes on Wednesday, sitting out while Bryant and Blakeney carved up the visitors without him.

Keep an eye on whether Vasilije Micic plays before placing a bet. Dubai have their own holes: Thomas Walkup is out with back discomfort, Mam Jaiteh is out with an Achilles injury, and Justin Anderson is out with a hamstring injury, all per the same Basketball Sphere report.

Hapoel are also without Tyler Ennis, who is out with a torn Achilles. The difference is depth. Hapoel just proved their second unit can win a game by 30. Dubai have not shown the same margin for error.

Key Factors

The schedule favors Dubai more than the standings do. Dubai played on Tuesday at home and have not traveled since, while Hapoel played on Wednesday and now make the trip to the Emirates on a two day turnaround. That is a genuine edge in a double round week, and it is the best reason to respect the home side here. Dubai are also 5-3 with real home wins already banked, including a 94-87 win over Barcelona in this building. A rested Dubai team that defends at even an average level is a hard night for anyone.

Recent history pushes back the other way. Hapoel won both meetings between these teams last season, 109-97 in Dubai and 85-60 in the return game, and the matchup problem has not changed: Dubai defend in a way that leaves shooters comfortable, and Hapoel have more comfortable shooters than anyone Paris brought to town on Tuesday.

Blakeney is the headline, but LeDay scored 22 points with 10 rebounds against Virtus Bologna last week, and Satoransky gives Itoudis a second organizer when Bryant sits. Dubai need Bacon and Kabengele to dominate their minutes and the defense to hold for 40 minutes, not 35. Hifi showed on Tuesday what happens when it holds for only 35.

The honest countercase is fatigue and regression. Hapoel shot 58.1 percent from three on Wednesday, a number no team sustains, and a cooler shooting night on tired legs in a road building is entirely plausible. If Dubai slow the game into a half court contest and Kabengele controls the paint, the home side can absolutely win this by two possessions.

But Hapoel do not need their Wednesday shooting to show up again. They need their ordinary offense, the one averaging 93.5 points per game this season, against a defense that keeps giving up ordinary nights and watching them turn into losses.

Our Pick
Hapoel Tel Aviv +3.0 (-106)

Dubai defend too loosely to be laying points against this offense. Hapoel just scored at will without Micic, their bench outscores opposing benches, and a loud home crowd cannot fix a defense that keeps breaking down late. The rest edge keeps it close, but close is all the visitors need. Take Hapoel Tel Aviv +3.0 (-106).
