Nadia Podoroska was unranked in March after a hip injury cost her fourteen months of her career. She is the eighth seed here and a WTA 250 finalist last month, and she is priced like the comeback has already happened. Miriam Bulgaru's job is to prove it has not.

The Matchup

This is a second-round match at the Queretaro Open, a WTA 125 event one tier below the main WTA Tour, played on outdoor clay at the Club Campestre de Queretaro. Nadia Podoroska is the eighth seed and one of the most decorated players in this draw: a former world No. 36 and a Roland Garros semifinalist in 2020, now ranked No. 201.

Miriam Bulgaru is a 28-year-old Romanian ranked No. 377 who won a WTA 125 title on clay in Bucharest in 2024 and reached No. 168 in the world in September 2025. Their only previous meeting is eight years old, a 6-4, 6-2 win for Bulgaru on clay in Hungary in 2018, and neither woman's career now resembles the one she had then.

Podoroska's ranking tells the story of her year in reverse. A hip injury kept her out for fourteen months, from January 2025 until March of this year, and she came back unranked, starting again in qualifying at the lowest level of the sport. She won a small title in Madrid in April and another in June, reached the second round of the US Open, and then made the final of the WTA 250 in Sao Paulo in September, beating Paula Badosa in the semifinals before losing the title match to Kaitlin Quevedo in three sets.

She was the first Argentine woman in a tour final since 2013. Her last ten matches read 6-4, and she opened here with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Alice Rame, breaking serve eight times. The one wart was her own serve: no aces and seven double faults. Bulgaru's first round was tidier, a 6-1, 6-1 win over Dasha Plekhanova, but her season is a 10-25 grind split between this level and the ITF circuit below it, and she has won four of her last ten matches.

One availability note belongs on the record: Bulgaru retired from her previous match before this event, two weeks ago at a W35 in Heraklion, trailing 0-6, 0-3 against a qualifier, with no reason reported. She has since won her first round here in straight sets, and neither player carries a reported injury this week.

Key Factors

The mechanism is the return game. Podoroska built the Sao Paulo run on pressure from the back of the court, heavy topspin that pushes opponents behind the clay, and she broke Rame eight times in two sets here.

Bulgaru's serve has been the leak in her own season: at this level in 2026 her clay record is an even 4-4, and the losses share a shape, straight sets against Mia Ristic and Carole Monnet and a three-set loss to Irene Burillo, all players who kept her second serve under pressure for two hours. Her wins this autumn, at this level and the one below it, have come against players ranked where she is ranked now.

Bulgaru's counter is genuine, and it is the surface. She has played clay all her career, she owns a WTA 125 title on it, and her 2024 win in Bucharest came against the kind of field Podoroska is trying to rejoin. She also takes sets off better players: she beat Federica Urgesi and Lina Gjorcheska in three sets this season and pushed Burillo to a third.

That matters enormously here, because a sets pick has no margin for a split afternoon. If Bulgaru's return games turn one set into a scramble, the pick is gone even if Podoroska wins the match, and Podoroska has played three-set matches in four of her last ten, including the Sao Paulo final she lost.

What Podoroska has that Bulgaru does not is a recent record of finishing these weeks. Since March she has climbed from no ranking at all to the edge of the top 200 by winning matches at every level she has entered, and the wins have come against the players directly in her path: Badosa in a tour semifinal, Suzan Lamens and Eva Lys in Sao Paulo, and now Rame here, converting eight break points along the way. Bulgaru has to produce her best match of the autumn, on a surface she loves but against the strongest return game in this quarter of the draw, and she has to do it for two full sets.

Our Pick
Nadia Podoroska -1.5 sets (-125)

Bulgaru is a real clay-court player, and she will not hand this over. But her season has been a grind at this level and the one below it, and Podoroska's comeback keeps producing its best tennis exactly here, in the late rounds of 125 draws on clay. Take Nadia Podoroska -1.5 sets at -125.

SCORE PROJECTION
Nadia Podoroska 2-0 (6-4, 6-3)
