First place walks into the loudest building in Spain on Wednesday night, and for once the home team is the one with the problem. Real Madrid have won six straight in this competition and have not lost at home, but they face Panathinaikos without either of the point guards who have run their offense all season, and the league's best defense is not the opponent you want while you improvise a backcourt.

The Matchup

Panathinaikos defend as well as anyone in Europe, and the table says so. They allow 75.0 points per game, the stingiest mark in the competition, and they sit at 7-2 on the back of it. Real Madrid are the opposite problem: they score 96.2 points per game, the highest mark in the league, and they have scored at least 95 points in each of their last five EuroLeague games. Wednesday is a genuine clash of those two identities, in a building where Madrid have not lost this season.

The trouble for Madrid is who is running that attack now. Theo Maledon scored 26 points against Fenerbahce on Thursday, played through a bad fall, and was then diagnosed with a sprained right knee that keeps him out until at least mid-November.

Facundo Campazzo hurt a leg muscle in the domestic game on Sunday, and head coach Pedro Martinez said on Tuesday that he is not counting on him. That leaves Madrid without either of the two point guards who have run this offense all season, and Martinez said it plainly: Madrid will not be able to play many minutes with a pure point guard, because they do not have one.

Panathinaikos, meanwhile, arrive close to full strength, and their best player is back in rhythm. Kendrick Nunn has scored 48 points in his three games since returning, including 20 against Milano and 17 at Efes, and his 17 at Efes led a team that otherwise went quiet.

That quiet night is the honest counterweight: Panathinaikos lost 83-68 at Efes, their lowest scoring game of the season, after cutting it to one point in the fourth quarter and then giving up a 14-0 run. A team that can stall like that is not a runaway favorite, even against a short-handed host.

Key Factors

Madrid's route back into this game runs through the glass. Walter Tavares scored 10 points with 12 rebounds at Baskonia and passed Kyle Hines as the EuroLeague's all-time offensive rebounding leader, with 825, and he followed it with 14 points against Fenerbahce.

Against a Panathinaikos front line built around Mathias Lessort, second chances are the one currency Madrid still control. Lessort scored 13 points with 11 rebounds against Milano and gives Panathinaikos the same kind of interior presence, so the rebounding battle will decide how many of Madrid's rushed possessions turn into points.

The absences shape everything else. Gabriel Deck is out after shoulder surgery, Mikael Jantunen is out with a torn plantar fascia in his left foot, and Usman Garuba is out long term with a torn ACL, so Madrid are five down before the point guard problem is even counted. Nick Smith Jr. is the one piece of good news: medically cleared after his foot problem and expected to suit up, though he has barely trained, so his minutes are a question.

Panathinaikos list just one absence, Nikos Rogkavopoulos, out with a left hamstring strain. Kostas Sloukas is questionable to play tonight. He was held out of the Efes game because he was not fully ready, though he was named in the domestic squad on Sunday, and no confirmation has him in the Madrid squad. Keep an eye on whether Kostas Sloukas plays before placing a bet.

The schedule gives neither side an excuse. Both teams played domestic games on Sunday, so rest is even. What is not even is recent history in this fixture: Panathinaikos won both meetings last season, 87-77 in this building and 82-81 in Athens. Madrid's home record says the building still matters. The last two meetings say the visitors have not cared.

Our Pick
Panathinaikos Athens -2.5 (-105)

Madrid's six-game winning run was built on guard play, and both of the guards who ran it are watching this one in street clothes. What is left is a makeshift backcourt asked to solve the best defense in the league, in a game where Panathinaikos can guard the first action and still have Lessort and Fall protecting the rim behind it. Tavares will get his second chances, but somebody has to get Madrid into its offense first. Take Panathinaikos Athens -2.5 (-105).
