The 11th seed opens his last push for Turin against a French qualifier who has already won twice on these courts. Benjamin Bonzi took a set in every indoor match he played this fall, and that habit is the whole problem for Taylor Fritz on Tuesday.

The Matchup

Taylor Fritz opens the Rolex Paris Masters on Tuesday against Benjamin Bonzi, and the week means more to him than a first round usually does. Fritz is the No. 11 seed and the world No. 13, and he sits 12th in the Race to Turin, 325 points behind the ninth place that now carries the last ATP Finals spot. Paris is worth 1,000 points to the winner, and anything short of a semifinal almost certainly ends his chase. He starts that chase against a qualifier ranked No. 99, in front of the qualifier's home crowd.

Bonzi earned this the hard way. He came through Paris qualifying on the weekend, beating Tallon Griekspoor on Saturday and Yannick Hanfmann on Sunday, and both matches went three sets. That is his autumn in miniature. The Frenchman is 38-27 this season, much of it built at Challenger level, and he plays his best tennis indoors, where he is 12-5 this year. Fritz will not be walking over a stranger to this court. Bonzi has already played two matches on it.

Their only previous meeting says less than it seems to. They met in the third round at Madrid in April 2025, on clay, and Bonzi won the first set before retiring hurt after the second. Fritz got the win and no real read on the matchup, and Tuesday is on indoor hard, the surface where both men have spent the last month.

Key Factors

Fritz's last month is the case. He is 7-3 over his last ten matches, and the indoor part of that run reads 6-2, with a final in Lyon and a semifinal in Basel in back to back weeks. Every one of his six indoor wins this fall came in straight sets, and the margins were not cosmetic.

He beat Denis Shapovalov by five games in Basel, Tommy Paul by five in Lyon, and Pierre-Hugues Herbert by six, the kind of scorelines a big serve and a short return game produce when both are firing on a fast court. Neither man carries an injury concern into Tuesday. Fritz finished his Basel semifinal on the court on Saturday, and Bonzi won both of his qualifying matches over the weekend and finished each one on the court.

Bonzi's route into this match cuts both ways, and it is the honest counterpoint. He took a set in all six of his indoor matches this fall, against Cameron Norrie and Tommy Paul at tour level and in both qualifying rounds here, so nobody should expect him to go away in two tidy sets. What he has not done is finish one of those matches against a player of Fritz's class.

His tour level indoor loss, to Paul in Lyon, also cost him the games count by four, and that was before he spent six sets on court across Saturday and Sunday while Fritz rested. A set is very live for Bonzi. Four games of margin is a different ask, and it is where his weekend starts to bill him: the longer his service games run, the more looks Fritz gets at second serves, and Fritz has been collecting those breaks in bunches all month.

The schedule spot belongs to Fritz as well. He last played on Saturday in Basel and has had two days to reset, while Bonzi's qualifying final finished on Sunday afternoon. Home support will lift the Frenchman early, and his first set on Sunday, a 7-5 win over Hanfmann, says he starts matches well here. Fritz just needs his normal indoor level, the one that produced six straight set wins in his last eight matches on this surface, and the margin his season has been built on should follow.

Our Pick
Taylor Fritz -3.5 games (-101)

Fritz is the better player by a wide margin, and his indoor form this fall says the margin shows up on the scoreboard, not just in the result. Bonzi is live for a set, and he may well take one, but a qualifier who spent six sets getting into this draw is asking a lot of his legs against a rested Fritz whose return game has been breaking serve all month. Take Taylor Fritz -3.5 games at -101.
