Houston goes to SoFi Stadium as a road favorite at 2-5 to face the 0-7 Chargers, the only winless team left, in a matchup of teams that protect the ball very differently.

The Matchup

Houston is the better passing team by a wide margin, and the Chargers still have a narrow way to hang around at home because they can run it and Houston cannot. Los Angeles averages 111.1 rushing yards per game against 84.7 for Houston, and Omarion Hampton has 89 carries for 309 yards and 3 touchdowns. Houston averages just 3.6 yards per carry. In a game with a total of only 40.5, a home team that can run it and shorten possessions does not need to be good to stay within one score. It needs to avoid disaster.

Avoiding disaster has been the Chargers problem all season. Los Angeles scores only 14.1 points per game, has thrown 10 interceptions as a team, and has 17 giveaways with a minus 6 turnover differential. Houston is the opposite. C.J.

Stroud has 1,867 yards with 11 touchdowns and 1 interception, and the Texans have only 3 giveaways as a team. Nico Collins has 24 catches for 329 yards and 3 touchdowns. Houston throws for 266.7 yards per game against 199.7 for Los Angeles, and that passing gap is why Houston is favored on the road despite a 2-5 record.

Availability hurts Los Angeles more. Brenen Thompson is out with a quadriceps injury. David Njoku is on injured reserve with a lower leg injury. Deane Leonard is out with a concussion, Kayode Awosika is out with a lower leg injury, and Rodney Shelley is out with a hamstring injury. That thins the Chargers secondary and line at the same time against Stroud. Houston loss is narrower in the packet. Jaylin Noel is on injured reserve with a toe injury for the Texans.

Recent form does not flatter either team. Houston lost to the Giants 27-21, beat Jacksonville 34-31 and beat Tennessee 26-3. Los Angeles lost to the Rams 24-9 at this same stadium in Week 8, lost to Kansas City 22-6, and lost to Denver 23-17. The Chargers takeaways offer a small counterweight. Los Angeles has 11 takeaways and 6 interceptions as a team, so even a struggling home team can manufacture a short field if Stroud finally makes a mistake.

Key Factors

The Texans case as road favorites is built on Stroud and scoring. Houston averages 23.6 points per game against 14.1 for Los Angeles, throws for 266.7 yards per game, and protects the ball at an elite level for a 2-5 team. The Chargers are winless at 0-7. That case falls short because Houston is also flawed in ways that matter on the road. The Texans allow 24.3 points per game, cannot run it at 84.7 yards per game, and are laying points away from home with a losing record of their own.

Hampton and the run game are the Chargers lifeline, but the line and secondary injuries cut both ways. If Los Angeles cannot block Houston front that has 21 sacks and 42 tackles for loss, Hampton has nowhere to go and the Chargers are forced to throw, which is where their season has broken down.

What beats the Chargers pick is Stroud picking apart a thin secondary and Los Angeles turnovers returning on schedule. If Leonard and Shelley being out leaves Collins and the Houston passing game with easy matchups, and the Chargers give it away two or three times as they have all season, Houston builds a two score lead and a winless team chasing a game at home covers nothing.

Our Pick
Chargers +4.5 (-110)

At home in a low total game, Los Angeles can lean on its run game to shorten possessions and stay within one score, even while its passing and depth problems keep a win unlikely. Houston is not built to run away on the road. Take the Chargers +4.5.
