Arkansas State is laying two touchdowns at home with a defense that just gave up 56 points. UL Monroe is 1-7 and going nowhere, but the Warhawks keep wandering into close games against teams that cannot stop anybody, and the Red Wolves currently cannot stop anybody.

The Matchup

The first thing to understand about Arkansas State's 4-4 record is how strange it is. The Red Wolves score 28.8 points per game behind Trey Owens, who has thrown for 1,940 yards and found a real connection with Jaylen Bonelli, the team's top receiver at 452 yards. Solomon Baggett adds 306 rushing yards. That offense is not the problem.

The problem is a defense allowing 27.2 points per game that keeps getting worse, giving up 56 to South Alabama and 32 at Georgia State in two of its last three games. When a defense leaks like that, laying 14.5 points stops being about the favorite's offense. UL Monroe is not good, and the copy should not pretend otherwise. The Warhawks are 1-7, they score 20.2 points per game, and they were shut out by Louisiana Tech.

But Aidan Armenta has thrown for 1,323 yards with Marcellus Jackson catching for 348 yards, and Austin Carlisle gives them 252 rushing yards of balance. More importantly, UL Monroe just beat Troy 21-14 and scored 21 on Southern Miss, so the offense functions against defenses that let it breathe. Arkansas State's defense lets everyone breathe. That is the matchup, and it is why two touchdowns feels like a price built on records rather than on what these defenses actually do.

Key Factors

Backdoor math favors the Warhawks all afternoon. Arkansas State's wins lately have been 38-32 and 23-13, grinders rather than routs, and a team that wins that way rarely covers two touchdowns even when it plays well. The Red Wolves' defense has to be on the field against an opponent with nothing to lose, and UL Monroe's coaching staff can call the whole playbook in a game where the season is already gone.

The honest counterpoint is the shutout. Louisiana Tech beat UL Monroe 24-0, and the Warhawks' floor is genuinely low: when Armenta is pressured and the run game stalls, this offense disappears for halves at a time. Arkansas State at home, with Owens playing well and bowl positioning still alive, could absolutely put together its cleanest game in a month and win by three scores.

Jonesboro has seen that version of the Red Wolves. But the version that has actually shown up lately gives up points in bunches, and a favorite that trades scores does not cover 14.5. UL Monroe needs two or three real drives and one late score against a softening defense. Against this Arkansas State unit, that is a reasonable afternoon's work.

Our Pick
UL Monroe +14.5 (-110)

Arkansas State can score, but a defense allowing this much, this recently, cannot be trusted to build or hold a two-touchdown margin. UL Monroe has a functional passing game and just beat Troy outright. The number asks the Red Wolves to be a team they have not been in a month. Take UL Monroe +14.5 at -110.
