The Commander-in-Chief's Trophy chase runs through West Point, where Army's option has been the more explosive of the two service academy attacks. Air Force defends better and arrives with the better record, but Michie Stadium and a workhorse quarterback give the Black Knights the edge the market expects.

The Matchup

Service academy games are supposed to be slogs, but Army's version of the option has produced real points. The Black Knights score 33.6 points per game, and everything runs through Cale Hellums, who has rushed for 874 yards while throwing for 462 more. He is the offense in a way few quarterbacks anywhere are, and when Army scored 56 on FAU and 38 on Tulsa in recent weeks, it was Hellums making the right read thirty times a night.

Air Force defends the better of the two, allowing 21.5 points per game, and the Falcons have their own option identity behind Liam Szarka, whose 296 passing yards tell you everything about how little this team throws. Evan Medders has rushed for 490 yards as the featured back, and Air Force has won at UNLV and at UConn in its last three.

The weakness is a scoring ceiling: the Falcons manage 29.2 points per game and lost 28-14 to Wyoming, the kind of physical front that mirrors what Army wants to be. Army's defense allows 25.5 points per game, the leakier unit here, and that is what keeps Air Force in the argument. But the Falcons have to defend Hellums for four quarters, and nobody has managed that for a full game in a month.

Key Factors

Home field in this series is not a cliché. Michie Stadium in November, against a triple-option team that holds the ball and shortens the game, is one of the most specific home edges in the sport, and Army's 33.6 points per game says the Black Knights finish the drives that Air Force's defense usually strangles.

Hellums is the separator: 874 rushing yards from the quarterback position means the Falcons cannot play assignment football and also account for the extra runner, and Szarka cannot answer that production in kind. The honest counterpoint is Army's defense and its most recent memory. The Black Knights allowed 49 at Memphis in their last game, and Air Force's offense, methodical as it is, can absolutely march against a defense that has been gashed like that.

If the Falcons control the first quarter and play from ahead, the game compresses into the exact shape Air Force wants. But Army has cleared 38 points twice in its last three games, and its one bad defensive afternoon does not erase what the offense does to teams at home. In a matchup of two option attacks, take the one with the better quarterback, the better scoring record, and the home crowd, and lay the small number.

Our Pick
Army -3.5 (-110)

Army has the more explosive option attack, the best player in the game at quarterback, and home field in a series where the home team dictates terms. Air Force defends well enough to keep this close for a half, but Hellums and the Michie Stadium crowd wear visiting defenses down in a way the Falcons have not solved away from home. Take Army -3.5 at -110.
