The White Sox visit the Guardians for a winner-take-all Game 5 of the AL Division Series. The series is tied 2-2.

01Starting Pitchers

Sean Burke (3.34 ERA, 1.20 WHIP) takes the ball for the White Sox against Gavin Williams (3.76 ERA, 1.11 WHIP) for the Guardians.

Burke's 3.34 ERA is the better number, but ERA does not tell the whole story. Williams' 1.11 WHIP compared to Burke's 1.20 is significant. WHIP measures baserunners allowed, and in a Game 5, baserunners become runs. Williams limits traffic better, which matters when every pitch is magnified.

The strikeout numbers also favor Williams. He has swing-and-miss stuff that plays in October. When the pressure mounts and hitters expand the zone, a pitcher who can get a strikeout without needing defensive help has a real advantage. Burke is more of a pitch-to-contact arm, which means his defense needs to be perfect behind him.

02Bullpen Battle

This is where Game 5s are decided. Neither starter is likely to see the seventh inning. Both managers will go to their bullpens early and often, playing matchups from the fifth inning on.

Cleveland's bullpen at home has a distinct advantage. Relievers feed off crowd energy, and Progressive Field will be electric. The Guardians can deploy their high-leverage arms in the highest-leverage spots without worrying about tomorrow, because there is no tomorrow.

Chicago's bullpen on the road faces a different challenge. Coming into a loud stadium in the middle innings, with the season on the line, is the toughest spot for a reliever. If Burke cannot give the White Sox six strong innings, the middle relief will be tested early.

03Offensive Matchup

In a game with two solid starters, runs will be at a premium. The team that manufactures runs, rather than waiting for the three-run homer, has the edge.

Cleveland at home should be able to generate offense against Burke. The Guardians' lineup is built for contact and putting pressure on defenses. If they can get Burke's pitch count up early and get into Chicago's bullpen by the fifth or sixth inning, the game tilts toward Cleveland.

The White Sox need Burke to be sharp and their offense to capitalize on limited opportunities. Against Williams, chances will be few. Chicago cannot afford to strand runners.

04Situational Edges

Home field in a Game 5 is massive. The Guardians have the crowd, the last at-bat, and the comfort of their own clubhouse. In winner-take-all games, the home team wins more often than not.

Cleveland also has the psychological edge of playing at home. The White Sox need to win on the road to advance, which means silencing a hostile crowd. That is easier said than done in October.

The Guardians' path is clear: get a solid start from Williams, turn it over to the bullpen with a lead, and let the crowd carry them home.

05The Pick: Guardians ML

Game 5 at home in the playoffs. It does not get any better than this.

We like the Guardians for three reasons. First, Gavin Williams' 1.11 WHIP shows he limits baserunners better than Burke, which is critical in a low-scoring game. Second, Cleveland's bullpen at home in a winner-take-all spot is the unit we trust more. Third, last at-bat at Progressive Field could be the difference if this is tied late.

The White Sox are a good team, but winning a Game 5 on the road against a solid starter and a deep home bullpen is a tall order. Take the Guardians on the moneyline to advance to the ALCS.

OUR VERDICT
Guardians ML

Cleveland has the momentum, they are at home, and their offense finally woke up. In a Game 5, take the team playing looser.
