The Guardians host the Rays in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series. Griffin Jax faces Gavin Williams at Progressive Field.

01The Matchup

Game 3 of the ALCS moves to Cleveland with the series tied 1-1, and it pairs the two most different pitching profiles left in the American League. Gavin Williams (3.76 ERA, 1.11 WHIP) is a pure power workhorse: 248 strikeouts in 184.1 innings across 32 starts, a 12.11 strikeout rate that leads this series, a .213 batting average against and only 7.03 hits allowed per nine. He does not work his way through lineups, he overwhelms them, and Cleveland will ask him to carry the biggest start of its season at home in a swing game.

Tampa counters with Griffin Jax (3.53 ERA, 1.18 WHIP), whose raw run prevention is actually a tick better and whose shape could not be more different. Jax worked 112.1 innings across 34 appearances with 23 starts, a hybrid workload that tells you how Tampa actually uses him: in bursts, rarely deep, with the bullpen always part of the plan. His rates are real - 116 strikeouts against 35 walks and 7.77 hits per nine - but 112.1 innings is 72 fewer than Williams threw this season, and a Game 3 on the road is a hard place to hide a short start. One team has a starter built to reach the seventh. The other has a plan built to survive the fourth.

02Key Factors

First, length is the hidden edge in this game. Williams averaged just under six innings across 32 starts and finished the season with 184.1 innings on his arm; Jax's 34 appearances produced 112.1 innings total, so even his starts come with a built-in expiration point. Every extra Tampa reliever who enters is another chance for Cleveland to catch the one arm having a bad day, and with Game 4 tomorrow and no off day to reset either bullpen, Tampa cannot burn its best leverage arms carelessly tonight either.

Second, the home run column is Williams's one real danger. He allowed 28 home runs, 1.37 per nine, the highest rate of any starter in this series, and Tampa hit 169 home runs with a .402 slugging percentage. Jax allowed 15 in 112.1 innings (1.20 per nine) - better, but not immune. If Williams's stuff flattens early, Tampa's power is the fastest way this game turns. If his strikeout pitch is sharp, Tampa has to string contact together against a .213 batting average against, and that is a much harder way to score in this park.

Third, Tampa owns the offensive and late-inning edges on paper, and Cleveland has to keep both from deciding the game. The Rays hit .258 with a .728 OPS, 736 runs and 164 stolen bases against Cleveland's .239 average, .696 OPS, 678 runs and 146 steals, and their back end runs Bryan Baker (1.44 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, 41 saves) with Kevin Kelly (2.44 ERA, 0.90 WHIP) in front of him. Cleveland answers with Cade Smith (1.95 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 41 saves), good enough to protect a late lead but not a reason to want a bullpen game. Cleveland's path is narrow and specific: Williams deep, a lead by the sixth, Smith for the ninth.

03The Pick: Guardians ML

We are on the Guardians on the moneyline, and it starts with the strikeout column. Gavin Williams struck out 248 hitters in 184.1 innings (12.11 per nine) with a 1.11 WHIP and a .213 average against, and he is the only starter in this game built to give his team six innings of swing-and-miss in a swing game at home. Griffin Jax (3.53 ERA, 1.18 WHIP) prevents runs just fine, but 112.1 innings across 34 appearances means Tampa's Game 3 plan has the bullpen baked into it from the middle innings on, on the road, with Game 4 tomorrow. Every extra arm Tampa uses is variance Cleveland never has to invite.

The honest risk is real and it has a name: the long ball. Williams allowed 28 home runs this season, and Tampa's 169-homer, .728 OPS lineup is better than Cleveland's on a neutral field - the Rays hold the closer edge too, with Bryan Baker (1.44 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, 41 saves). If Williams gives up two early homers, the offensive gap takes over and Tampa's wider path wins. But at home, in a tied series, with the swing game starting on his mound, we will take the pitcher who can end rallies by himself over the plan that needs a chain of relievers to be perfect. Guardians ML.

OUR VERDICT
Guardians ML

Williams (248 strikeouts, 12.11 per nine, 1.11 WHIP) is the only starter in this game built to go deep; Jax threw 112.1 innings in 34 appearances, so Tampa's plan is a bullpen chain on the road. Guardians ML.
