The Dodgers host the Brewers in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series, facing elimination down 3-0. Shane Drohan faces Tyler Glasnow at UNIQLO Field at Dodger Stadium.

01The Matchup

Game 4 of the NLCS is the first game in this series where the pitching matchup is not close, and it arrives with Los Angeles out of margin. Milwaukee leads 3-0 after wins that included a 6-2 result in Game 3 here, and the Dodgers need a win at UNIQLO Field at Dodger Stadium simply to keep their season alive. Tyler Glasnow (3.53 ERA, 0.95 WHIP) gives them the right arm for that spot on paper: 98 strikeouts in 74.0 innings across 13 starts, 11.92 strikeouts per nine, a .175 batting average against and only 5.47 hits allowed per nine. Hitters did not solve him this season, they survived him when his workload ran out, and his last two regular season starts showed the length Los Angeles needs - six innings with 10 strikeouts against San Francisco on September 18, then 6.1 innings with 11 strikeouts against San Diego on September 24.

Milwaukee counters with Shane Drohan (4.19 ERA, 1.32 WHIP), a left-hander whose season tells a very different story. Drohan worked 124.2 innings across 33 appearances with only 19 starts, struck out 125 with a solid 9.02 rate per nine, but allowed a .255 average and 8.74 hits per nine, both a clear step behind Glasnow. His final September appearances were short relief work, not starter build-up: 3.2 innings on September 12, then 0.2, 1.2, 2.2 and 1.2 innings in his last four outings. Milwaukee is not starting a stretched-out workhorse in a sweep game on the road. It is starting a hybrid arm and planning for its bullpen from the early innings on, which is a luxury a 3-0 lead buys and a risk that same lead can hide for only so long.

02Key Factors

First, the contact gap is the widest of the series. Glasnow allowed 5.47 hits per nine and a .175 average; Drohan allowed 8.74 hits per nine and a .255 average. Milwaukee's offense is built on traffic - a .258 average, a .341 on-base percentage, 832 runs and 162 stolen bases - but traffic requires reaching base, and Glasnow is the hardest starter in this series to reach against. Los Angeles, by contrast, slugged .424 with 204 home runs and a .762 OPS, and a lineup built that way does not need to string four hits together against Drohan. It needs two or three mistakes in the zone, and Drohan's 1.01 home runs per nine and 3.18 walks per nine say mistakes and free passes both arrive more often against him.

Second, length decides whose bullpen plan survives. If Glasnow repeats his September pattern and gives Los Angeles six innings, the Dodgers can hand a late lead to Tanner Scott (2.69 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, 25 saves) on a normal script. If Drohan follows his recent pattern and exits early, Milwaukee has to cover most of a nine-inning elimination game with relievers, however good the end of that group is. Trevor Megill (2.63 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, 30 saves) allowed only one home run in 61.2 innings, so a lead in the ninth is safe for Milwaukee - the problem is getting a lead to the ninth through that many bullpen innings on the road without one arm giving the game away in the middle.

Third, Milwaukee's one clear path runs through Glasnow's walk column. He walked 25 in 74.0 innings, 3.04 per nine, and the Brewers drew 668 walks as a team. If Glasnow's command is loose early, Milwaukee's on-base and stolen base game can manufacture runs without hitting him hard, exactly as it has all series. If his command is sharp, that path closes fast, because Milwaukee hit 154 home runs to Los Angeles's 204 and cannot win a pure power trade against this lineup in this park.

03The Pick: Dodgers ML

We are on the Dodgers on the moneyline, and for once in this series the reason is the simplest one available: the starting pitching gap is too large to explain away. Tyler Glasnow (3.53 ERA, 0.95 WHIP) held hitters to a .175 average with 11.92 strikeouts per nine and 5.47 hits per nine, and he closed September with back-to-back six-inning, double-digit strikeout starts. Shane Drohan (4.19 ERA, 1.32 WHIP) allowed a .255 average and 8.74 hits per nine, made only 19 starts in 33 appearances, and spent his final September outings working short relief stints of 2.2 innings or fewer in four of his last five games. One team starts its hardest pitcher to hit with its season on the line at home. The other starts a bullpen plan and hopes the chain holds.

The honest risk is the series itself. Milwaukee is up 3-0 for real reasons: a .341 on-base percentage, 162 stolen bases, 832 runs, a 3.51 team ERA and a closer in Trevor Megill who allowed one home run all season. If Glasnow walks the early traffic this lineup is built to create, Milwaukee can steal a sweep the same way it stole the first three games, by reaching base, moving and cashing in without ever hitting the starter hard. But Los Angeles does not need a new formula tonight. It needs Glasnow to be Glasnow for six innings, and its 204-homer lineup to get the extra at-bats against a hittable left-hander and a stretched bullpen that Drohan's profile all but guarantees. OUR VERDICT
Dodgers ML

Glasnow (3.53 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, .175 average against, 11.92 strikeouts per nine) is a clear step ahead of Drohan (4.19 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, .255 average against), whose recent outings were short relief work. Dodgers ML.
