Game 4 of the World Series, and Milwaukee is one win from the first championship in franchise history. The Brewers have won eight straight behind a lineup hitting .272 this October and a bullpen that has allowed eight earned runs all postseason. Griffin Jax, steady all season and shaky this month, is Tampa Bay's last stand at Tropicana Field.

The Matchup

The World Series is one night from ending. Milwaukee leads Tampa Bay 3-0 after a 10-1 rout in Game 3 at Tropicana Field, and the Brewers have won eight straight games and 10 of 11 this postseason: a division series over San Diego, a sweep of the Dodgers, and three straight over the Rays. No team has ever come back from 3-0 down to win a World Series, and nothing about the first three games suggests this Tampa Bay lineup is the one to start.

The Brewers are winning these games at the plate as much as on the mound. Milwaukee is hitting .272 as a team this postseason with a .766 OPS and 52 runs in 11 games, and the middle of the order is driving it. William Contreras is batting .419 with three home runs and a 1.141 OPS this October. Jackson Chourio has driven in nine runs, Christian Yelich is hitting .314, and the runs have come in bunches: 18 of them across the three World Series games.

Tampa Bay's lineup has gone the other way. The Rays are hitting .221 this postseason and have scored seven runs in the three games of this series, four of them in one first inning in Game 2. They are home, they are desperate, and their season now depends on a swingman turned Game 4 starter and a lineup that has not solved Milwaukee pitching in any inning that mattered.

Key Factors

The pitching story of this game is a bullpen, and it is not close. Milwaukee's relievers own a 1.34 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP across 53.2 innings this postseason, with 52 strikeouts against 31 hits allowed. Aaron Ashby has thrown 15.2 scoreless innings by himself, allowing five hits. Abner Uribe, Trevor Megill, DL Hall and JoJo Romero have combined to allow four earned runs behind him.

Milwaukee had not announced a Game 4 starter as of Tuesday afternoon, and on most teams that would be the story. With this bullpen, the name of the opener matters less than the arms standing behind him, because the late innings of every game this month have belonged to Milwaukee.

Griffin Jax gets the ball for Tampa Bay, and his two seasons in one year are the Rays' whole dilemma. He was a genuine asset across the regular season, a 3.53 ERA over 112.1 innings in a swing role. October has not cooperated: a 6.00 ERA in six postseason innings, with nine baserunners allowed. Tampa Bay needs length from Jax to keep its own bullpen out of the middle innings, and his recent work says the Brewers' lineup will get its chances early.

The honest counterpoint is that this series is closer than 3-0 reads. Games 1 and 2 were both one-run games, Tampa Bay is home with its season on the line, and Jax's full-season form is good enough to steal a game if he locates early. Closeout games ask a favorite to finish, and finishing is its own pressure. The problem for the Rays is that the same script has now played three times: Milwaukee scores in more innings, Milwaukee's bullpen slams the door, and Tampa Bay runs out of outs.

Our Pick
Brewers ML (-124)
Pick set: Oct 27, 2026, 12:13 PM CT

Tampa Bay's season comes down to Griffin Jax finding his regular-season form in the biggest start of his life, and nothing in his October says that is on its way. Milwaukee's lineup scores without waiting for the home run, and once a game reaches the late innings it belongs to the Brewers' bullpen, the unit that has decided this postseason. That has been the story of this series from the first night. Brewers ML at -124 (DraftKings via ESPN).
