Kansas City brings a 5-1 record to Mile High, but the Chiefs scored only 3 points in Seattle last week and walk in behind a thinned offensive line. Denver is 5-2, at home in the altitude, and built to turn a division game into a grind.

The Matchup

Denver's whole case starts with a pass rush that changes games. The Broncos have 21 sacks this season, and they get to hunt a Kansas City line that is missing real pieces.

Jaylon Moore is out with a concussion, and Josh Simmons is on injured reserve with a back injury, so Patrick Mahomes will be throwing behind a patchwork front. Mahomes has still been Mahomes for most of the year, with 1,474 passing yards and 9 touchdowns, but pressure is the one thing that has always made this offense look ordinary, and Denver generates it as well as anyone the Chiefs have faced.

Kansas City's best answer is on the ground. Kenneth Walker III has 701 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns, and the Chiefs run for 141.5 yards per game, so they can slow the rush down by handing the ball off and keeping Mahomes out of obvious passing downs. That plan worked in the wins.

It did not work in Seattle last week, when the Chiefs managed 3 points in a 20-3 loss and never found any rhythm at all. Denver only allows 20.1 points per game, and at home the Broncos are comfortable winning exactly the kind of low, tight game Kansas City just lost.

The honest problem for Denver is in its own secondary. Pat Surtain II is out with an ankle injury, and Talanoa Hufanga is out with an ankle injury, so the Broncos lose their best corner and a starting safety in the same week Mahomes comes to town. Travis Kelce, who leads Kansas City with 343 receiving yards, will get chances against backups. Denver is also thinner at receiver than it would like.

Jaylen Waddle is questionable to play with a chest injury, and Zach Allen is questionable with a hamstring injury on the defensive line. Keep an eye on whether Waddle plays before placing a bet. Bo Nix does not throw for much in this offense, at 181.6 passing yards per game for the team, but he ran for 73 yards and a touchdown against Arizona last week, and his legs are part of how Denver moves the ball when the passing game stalls.

Key Factors

The game likely turns on whether Denver's rush gets home before Mahomes finds Kelce and the middle of the field. If Allen plays and the front keeps collapsing the pocket, Kansas City's drives end in punts and field goals, and the altitude starts to matter in the fourth quarter for a visiting team chasing the game. If the rush stalls, the Chiefs have the quarterback to pick on a secondary missing Surtain and Hufanga all afternoon.

Denver also has to survive its own offense. The Broncos run for only 94.9 yards per game, and Kansas City allows just 17.2 points per game, the stingiest mark in this matchup. The Chiefs are shorthanded too, with Rashee Rice out with a hamstring injury, which removes a real target from Mahomes and lets Denver squeeze the field a little tighter. Denver does not need a shootout. It needs first downs, field position, and a defense that keeps the score in the low twenties, where one late drive decides it.

What beats this pick is easy to picture. Mahomes is the best player on the field, and if he gets even average protection he will attack the spots where Surtain and Hufanga should be, with Kelce working the seams and Walker finishing drives. Kansas City has won games like this for years, and a couple of early touchdowns would force Nix to throw into a defense that has 6 interceptions and 10 takeaways. If Denver falls behind by two scores early, the grind disappears and the Chiefs cover comfortably.

Our Pick
Broncos +1.5 (-110)

Denver at home, in a division game, with a pass rush built to wreck a patchwork offensive line, is a tough team to lay points against. Kansas City has the better quarterback, but the Chiefs walk into altitude behind a thinned-out line and into the loudest kind of rivalry game. Denver does not need to outplay Patrick Mahomes for four quarters. It needs the grind it usually gets at Mile High. Take the Broncos +1.5.
