Washington is favored at home on Sunday night despite a 1-4-1 record, and Philadelphia limps in on a three-game losing streak with its best lineman out. Somebody's season bends at Northwest Stadium, and neither defense suggests it will be pretty.

The Matchup

Start with the unit that makes this line hard to trust. Washington's defense allows 28.7 points per game, the softest number in this matchup by a wide margin, and that is the opening for an Eagles offense that has struggled to reach 18.1 points per game. Philadelphia does not need to be explosive.

Dallas Goedert leads the team with 228 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns, and the Eagles just need steady drives against a defense that has not strung stops together all season. A Washington team this leaky at home is a strange favorite, even against a slumping visitor.

Jayden Daniels is Washington's counterweight, and he is a genuine problem. Daniels threw for 300 yards and 2 touchdowns against San Francisco in Week 6, and he ran for 103 yards and 2 touchdowns against the Giants the week before that, so Philadelphia has to defend his arm and his legs on the same snap. But Daniels is working without his best receiver.

Terry McLaurin is out with a knee injury, and Jaylin Lane is on injured reserve, so the Commanders' passing game loses the targets that stretch a defense. Washington is also thin behind Daniels, because backup quarterback Marcus Mariota is questionable to play with a knee injury. If anything happens to the starter, the Commanders are in real trouble.

Philadelphia's problems are just as real, and they start up front. Lane Johnson is out, and his absence has a way of shrinking the Eagles' whole playbook. Saquon Barkley is questionable to play with a back injury after carrying 43 times for 244 yards this season. Keep an eye on whether Barkley plays before placing a bet.

Washington had its bye in Week 7 and comes in rested, which helps, but the Commanders convert only 30.9 percent of their third downs, and rested or not, an offense that stalls that often leaves its bad defense on the field too long. Philadelphia has lost three straight, including 38-21 at Dallas last week, so nothing here is comfortable. It is a question of which flawed team the points flatter less.

Key Factors

Washington's defense against a desperate team is where the value sits. The Commanders have allowed 172 points in six games, and Philadelphia, for all its problems, still has the backs and the tight end to sustain drives against a front that has only 11 sacks. If Barkley plays and the Eagles can run even a little, Washington's defense will be on the field long enough to crack late, the way it has all year.

Daniels and the bye week are Washington's real edges. He is the best athlete in the game, the Commanders have had two weeks to scheme around McLaurin's absence, and Philadelphia's defense allows 25.0 points per game, so the home team will move the ball. The question is whether Washington can finish. An offense converting third downs this poorly tends to settle for field goals, and field goals do not cover spreads against anyone.

What beats this pick is the Eagles' own injury list. If Barkley sits or is limited, Philadelphia loses its best way to control the game, and without Lane Johnson the pass protection in front of a struggling offense could collapse against even an average rush.

Washington has also protected the ball remarkably well, with only 2 giveaways all season, so the cheap points Philadelphia needs may never come. If Daniels runs loose early and Washington plays from ahead at home on Sunday night, the rested favorite wins by a touchdown and this one is not close late.

Our Pick
Eagles +4.5 (-110)

Washington is laying points with a defense that gives them up in bunches and an offense missing its best receiver. Philadelphia is flawed and banged up, but the Eagles are getting points against a team that has won once all season. This is the kind of ugly Sunday night game that stays close because neither side can pull away. Take the Eagles +4.5.
