Ciryl Gane vs Josh Hokit Prediction, Odds, Best Bets - UFC 334
An undefeated challenger who has won almost everything on his feet runs into the smoothest striker the heavyweight division has, with the belt on the line at Madison Square Garden. Josh Hokit's first five-round fight is the hardest one the division can give him.
The Matchup
Ciryl Gane defends the heavyweight title for the first time as undisputed champion, and the belt reached him in two steps: he stopped Alex Pereira in the second round in June to win the interim title, and the UFC promoted him in September after Tom Aspinall vacated. The game that carried him there is the cleanest striking the division has.
Gane lands 5.40 significant strikes a minute at 62 percent accuracy, absorbs only 2.31, and defends 61 percent of what comes back at him. He stands 6'4" with an 81-inch reach, he fights long, and his average fight runs thirteen minutes because opponents spend so long just trying to reach him.
Josh Hokit is the opposite shape of contender. He is 10-0 and ranked No. 4, and he has spent his whole career running at people: 9.29 significant strikes a minute, six knockouts, six first-round finishes, and an average fight time of 7:14 that tells you how little patience he brings.
His UFC run is four straight wins since his debut last November, a 56-second knockout of Max Gimenis, a first-round knockout of Denzel Freeman, a decision over Curtis Blaydes, and a second-round knockout of Derrick Lewis in June, on the same card where Gane beat Pereira. The Blaydes win is the one that makes this booking real. Blaydes has spent a decade as the division's wrestling gatekeeper, and Hokit beat him over three rounds.
Key Factors
The fight turns on distance, because both of Hokit's routes start with crossing it. His background is wrestling, and his listed fighting style says so, but his UFC wins have come on his feet, and the blitz that has carried his UFC run has to travel through an 81-inch reach and the best strike defense in the division to land at the Garden.
Gane has been beaten on the ground before: Jon Jones submitted him in the first round of their title fight in 2023, so the wrestling route is not imaginary. It is just unproven at this level. Hokit has never had to chain attempts against a man this big, this mobile, or this hard to hold down, and every failed entry leaves him standing in front of a counter striker who connects at 62 percent.
The case for the challenger is that Gane's comfort is a habit Hokit refuses to honor. Hokit absorbs 5.28 significant strikes a minute because he does not care about being hit on the way in, and a champion expecting a chess match can find himself in a brawl before he settles. Hokit is 28, eight years younger, and he has finished nine of his ten wins.
But five rounds is a distance he has never fought, against the one heavyweight who makes five rounds feel longest. Gane has gone the championship distance and won late rounds against elite opposition. Hokit's fights have lasted, on average, barely seven minutes a night. If the early storm does not move Gane, this fight gets longer, lonelier, and more technical with every round, and that is the champion's home ground.
Our lean is Gane, and the fight itself is not a close call: he is the better striker, the bigger man, and the only one of the two who has lived in championship rounds. The prices are the problem. His moneyline is -258, past the point where we will lay a UFC favorite, and Pinnacle posts no rounds or method market for this fight yet, so there is no other way to back him.
Hokit's +215 asks us to bet that a blitz beats the division's best distance game, and ten wins against lesser opposition do not make that case. We project Gane by KO/TKO in the third round, as Hokit's entries start costing him. Lean: Ciryl Gane. No bet.
