Jacksonville comes off its bye at 4-2 and hosts an Indianapolis team that has lost three straight. The Colts still have Jonathan Taylor, but almost everything around him has gone wrong at once.

The Matchup

Trevor Lawrence is having the kind of season Jacksonville needed from him. Lawrence has thrown for 1,480 yards with 14 touchdowns against 4 interceptions, and Parker Washington has emerged as his most productive target with 26 catches for 416 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Against Philadelphia, Lawrence threw for 331 yards and 2 touchdowns while Washington caught 6 passes for 124 yards and both scores. Jacksonville averages 246.7 passing yards per game at 8.0 yards per attempt, and that efficiency drives an offense scoring 25.7 points per game.

Indianapolis leans on one player to an unhealthy degree. Jonathan Taylor has carried 140 times for 587 yards and 8 touchdowns, and Taylor topped 90 rushing yards in each of his last two games. The passing game around him has produced only 4 touchdowns all season against 7 interceptions, and the Colts have turned the ball over 12 times while taking it away just 3 times. A minus 9 turnover differential explains a 2-5 record better than any other number on the page.

The injury report deepens the Colts' problem. Tight end Tyler Warren is out with a groin injury, removing a key target from a passing game that has almost none to spare, and receiver Anthony Gould is out with a concussion. Jacksonville is not clean either. Tackle Anton Harrison is on injured reserve with a knee injury, a real loss for the line protecting Lawrence.

Key Factors

Taylor against a rested Jacksonville defense is the game in miniature. The Jaguars allow 17.3 points per game and had a bye week to prepare for the one thing Indianapolis does well. If Jacksonville loads up against Taylor and forces the Colts to throw, Indianapolis has shown little evidence it can answer, and the Colts convert just often enough on third down to keep drives alive only when Taylor is moving the chains.

Lawrence should find room to work. Jacksonville converts 47.9 percent of third downs, the best mark in this matchup by a clear margin, and Washington's production against Philadelphia showed what this passing game does against a secondary that cannot match up. Indianapolis has intercepted only 2 passes all season, so Lawrence can play aggressively without his usual caution.

The counterpoint is Taylor himself. He is good enough to take over a game Jacksonville expects to control, and 8 rushing touchdowns show how often he finishes drives. If he breaks the Jaguars' front early and Indianapolis shortens the game, the Colts stay within one score and the big number becomes hard to reach.

Our Pick
Jaguars -7.5 (-110)

Jacksonville is rested, at home, and better at nearly every position group that decides a division game, while Indianapolis keeps giving the ball away and leaning on a single runner. The Colts also lost a key target in Tyler Warren, and their passing game was already the weakest part of this matchup. Lay the points with the fresher, deeper team. Take the Jaguars -7.5.
