Virtus Bologna were 4-2 and dreaming not long ago. Three EuroLeague defeats in a row, two of them at PalaDozza and one thrown away from 13 points up in the final minutes, have changed the mood in Bologna. Dubai Basketball arrive on Friday night at 6-3, winners of four of their last five, with a former Virtus favourite in their ranks and a road record that travels. Something has to give in a building that has stopped protecting its own.

The Matchup

Two teams moving in opposite directions meet at PalaDozza on Friday night. Virtus Bologna have lost three straight in this competition and sit at 4-5 after opening 4-2. Dubai Basketball have won four of their last five and sit at 6-3, and they have won three straight on the road. The table says Dubai should control this game. The building, and what Virtus still do well inside it, says the night will be argued over.

Virtus's problem is not scoring, and Derrick Alston Jr. is the proof. He is their top scorer this season at 14.0 points per game, and he has led them in defeat after defeat through the slump, scoring 19 points against Besiktas on Friday, 18 against Zalgiris two nights earlier, and 16 more against Trieste in the Italian League on Monday.

Marcus Carr runs the offense behind him at 13.1 points and 5.1 assists per game, and Wendell Moore Jr. adds 11.7 points a night. The shots are still falling for the men who take most of them. What has stopped working is everything that happens after Virtus build a lead.

Dubai's scorers arrive in better spirits. Filip Petrusev scored 20 points on perfect 6-of-6 shooting in the 97-83 win over Hapoel Tel Aviv on Friday, Elie Okobo added 18, and Dwayne Bacon scored 17. Bacon is Dubai's top scorer this season at 16.7 points per game, and Mfiondu Kabengele gives them 14.4 points and 7.7 rebounds a night, the most reliable inside scorer in this game after Aliou Diarra.

There is a subplot in the visiting frontcourt, too. Tornike Shengelia made his name in this city as a Virtus star, and the league's own preview bills this as his return with Dubai. He has been a bit-part player so far at 5.8 points in 14.4 minutes a game, but he scored 20 against Zadar on Monday, and nobody in the building needs telling what he can do when a game turns personal.

Key Factors

The number that keeps Virtus in this game is rebounding, because nobody in the league does it better. Virtus top the EuroLeague at 40.6 rebounds per game, and 13.7 of them come at the offensive end, second chances that let a home team hang around even when its half-court offense stalls. Aliou Diarra is the engine of it.

He averages 11.6 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game while shooting 68.5 percent from the field, and he gave Zalgiris 13 points and 6 rebounds in 17 minutes last week. Dubai collect 35.3 rebounds a game as a team, and with Mam Jaiteh out for the season, their center minutes lean hard on Kabengele and Petrusev. Diarra's energy on the glass is where extra Virtus possessions come from.

The honest worry is the other end, and it is a real one. Virtus allowed an average of 97 points across their two home defeats last week, 91 to Zalgiris and 103 to Besiktas, and the Besiktas loss still stings worst of all. Virtus led 97-84 with 3:47 left and lost 103-101 on a Conor Morgan three in the final seconds.

A team that defends like that can lose any game by twenty. But note what the same night proved about their floor at home. They scored 101 on a good defensive team, and they scored 93 more against Trieste on Monday. The offense in this building travels nowhere; it lives here.

Availability is light on both sides, with one name to watch for the visitors. Tommaso Baldasso is out for Virtus. He has a right knee contusion, was ruled out for Rounds 8 and 9, and was still sidelined for Monday's game against Trieste.

Mam Jaiteh is out for Dubai with an Achilles injury that ends his season, and Justin Anderson is out as well, having yet to play this season because of injury. Thomas Walkup is questionable to play on Friday. He was not on Dubai's roster in Round 8 or Round 9 and is dealing with back discomfort. Keep an eye on whether Thomas Walkup plays before placing a bet.

The week shapes the rest. Virtus have not left Bologna, even if Monday's home loss to Trieste deepened the gloom, while Dubai beat Zadar at home on Monday and then flew across three time zones for this one. A desperate home team, the league's best glass, and a favourite at the end of a long week is a combination that usually produces a close game, whatever the table says.

Our Pick
Virtus Bologna +4.5-111

Dubai are the better team right now, and they may leave Bologna with the win. But Virtus score at home, they own the glass like no one else in this league, and Dubai have to cross half a continent after a Monday game to face a desperate side in a loud building. That is a recipe for a game that stays tight to the end. Take Virtus Bologna +4.5 (-111).
