Detroit takes a 5-2 record and a three-game winning run to Hard Rock Stadium to face Miami on Sunday. The Dolphins are 1-6 at home, and the division-leading Lions are on the road against the weakest record in the AFC.

The Matchup

Detroit is the better team by a mile on paper, and still this game sets up as a slog rather than a showcase. The Lions allow 25.7 points per game despite their record, which is a generous number for a home underdog to work with.

Their last two wins were 19 to 15 over Minnesota and 20 to 17 over Green Bay, tight and low-scoring, after a 45 to 21 win over Arizona showed what they look like when everything clicks. Miami's recent results have the same tight shape, a 24 to 19 loss to New England, a 28 to 25 win over the Jets and a 31 to 24 loss to Cincinnati. Neither team has been living in blowouts lately.

The Lions' stars are not in dispute. Jared Goff has 1,964 yards with 15 touchdowns and just 1 interception, Jahmyr Gibbs has 157 carries for 773 yards and 8 touchdowns, and Amon-Ra St. Brown has 53 catches for 571 yards and 5 touchdowns. Detroit gains 412.0 yards per game and scores 29.0. Miami's defense, with only 9 sacks, will struggle to knock Goff off his spot.

D.J. Reed is questionable with a hip injury at cornerback for Detroit, less relevant to the Lions' offense but a real question for a defense already giving up points. Keep an eye on whether D.J. Reed plays before placing a bet.

Miami's case has to be honest about what is missing. De'Von Achane is on injured reserve with a knee injury at running back, a huge absence for an offense averaging only 16.7 points per game. Kadyn Proctor is out with a concussion at tackle, and Ronnie Harrison Jr. is on injured reserve with a hamstring injury at linebacker while Trey Moore is on injured reserve with an ankle injury at linebacker.

Still, Miami rushes for 123.3 yards per game, close to Detroit's 131.4, and that ground game at home is how a bad team keeps a good one from settling into rhythm. Detroit also has Jack Campbell doubtful with a neck injury at linebacker and Jimmy Rolder out with a hamstring injury at linebacker, so the middle of that defense is not at full strength against the run.

Key Factors

Detroit's linebacker health against the Miami ground game is a quiet decider. Campbell doubtful and Rolder out would leave the Lions thin at exactly the level Miami needs to attack to shorten this game and protect a limited passing attack at 181.1 yards per game. If Miami runs it well enough to keep third downs short, the home crowd gets a fourth-quarter game. If Gibbs gets loose early for Detroit, none of that matters and the talent gap takes over.

The favorite case is the talent case, and it is formidable. Goff has thrown 1 interception all season, Gibbs and St. Brown are stars in form, Detroit scores 29.0 points per game against a Miami team scoring 16.7, and the Dolphins are 1-6 for good reasons that start with Achane being lost. Laying a touchdown with Detroit is easy to justify.

It falls short because Detroit's own defense allows 25.7 points per game and its last two wins came by 4 and 3 points. A favorite that plays tight games on the road, against a home team whose last three results were decided by 5, 3 and 7 points, is being asked to do something it has not been doing lately.

What beats this pick is Detroit's offense playing the Arizona version of itself instead of the Minnesota and Green Bay version. If Goff deals early, Gibbs breaks a long run, and Miami falls behind by two scores, an offense without Achane and scoring 16.7 points per game has no way back. The Dolphins chasing through the air in the second half is the blowout path, and Detroit has the players to force exactly that if it starts fast.

Our Pick
Dolphins +7 (-110)

Detroit is better in every way but keeps playing tight games, and Miami at home has been losing close rather than getting run off its own field. Take the Dolphins +7.
