Jacksonville brings a 5-2 record to M&T Bank Stadium for Thursday night football against a Baltimore team that has lost three straight. The Ravens are home and desperate, and the Jaguars arrive rested after playing just once in three weeks.

The Matchup

Baltimore does not need to outscore Jacksonville to stay in this game. The Ravens need to shorten it, and they have the back to do it. Derrick Henry has 158 carries for 632 yards and 8 touchdowns, and Baltimore runs for 133.5 yards per game at 4.6 yards per carry. If Henry controls the early downs, Trevor Lawrence watches from the sideline and the crowd stays in it. That is the whole shape of this game in my view. A grind favors the home team far more than a shootout does.

Lawrence is the obvious danger. He has thrown for 1,690 yards with 17 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions, and Jacksonville averages 28.0 points and 365.4 yards per game. Baltimore makes that job a little harder on itself with its own absences. Jaylinn Hawkins is out with a knee injury in the secondary. Roquan Smith is questionable with a foot injury, and his presence in the middle matters against both the run and the short passing game. Keep an eye on whether Roquan Smith plays before placing a bet.

Jacksonville has a hole of its own back deep. Eric Murray is out with an elbow injury at safety. That matters because Zay Flowers is Baltimore's clearest way to punish a defense that loads up on Henry. Flowers has 40 catches for 608 yards and 3 touchdowns, and he only needs a handful of clean looks for Baltimore to stay on schedule without asking its passing game to carry the night.

Jacksonville allows just 15.9 points per game, so nothing here comes easy. The point is narrower. Baltimore has two proven ways to move the ball, and that is usually enough at home to keep a big number honest.

Key Factors

Henry's volume against a short week is the swing piece. Both teams played on Sunday, but Jacksonville had its bye in Week 7 and has played one game in three weeks while Baltimore has played three. Fresh legs help the favorite, yet a Thursday home game still rewards the team that can hand the ball off and avoid long, messy drives.

Baltimore's rushing game is exactly that kind of stabilizer. On the other side, Justice Hill is questionable with a groin injury and Roger Rosengarten is questionable with an ankle injury, so Baltimore's depth around Henry and up front is not at full strength either. Keep an eye on whether Roger Rosengarten plays before placing a bet.

The favorite case is strong and it deserves to be stated plainly. Jacksonville scores 28.0 points per game and allows 15.9, Lawrence has a 17 to 4 touchdown to interception line, and Baltimore has scored 10, 13 and 10 points in three straight losses to Buffalo, Cincinnati and Cleveland. On form alone, laying points with the Jaguars is easy to understand.

It falls short at this price because the game is in Baltimore and because Henry gives the Ravens a way to keep drives and the clock moving. Laying eight and a half points on the road on a short week is a different ask than simply winning, even against a defense allowing 25.4 points per game.

What beats this pick is not subtle. Jacksonville starts fast the way it did in a 42 to 7 win at Indianapolis in Week 8, Henry gets squeezed out of the script, and Baltimore has to chase through the air with Hawkins already out on the other side of the ball doing nothing to help the defense hold up.

If Lawrence builds a two-score lead early and Flowers never gets a clean chance to answer, the Ravens have shown in the last three weeks that they do not have a comeback gear. An early Jacksonville surge is the loss, and it would look comfortable.

Our Pick
Ravens +8.5 (-110)

Baltimore at home on a short week is a hard place to run away from a team, and the Ravens have the ground game to keep this tight and physical to the end. Take the Ravens +8.5.
