Purdue is favored at home because somebody has to be. The Boilermakers give up 32.1 points per game, Maryland gives up 31.6, and both quarterbacks have thrown for more yards than their teams' records suggest should be possible. This is a November pillow fight between two programs playing out the string, which is precisely when points get valuable.

The Matchup

Start with the two quarterbacks, because they are the best things about this game. Purdue's Ryan Browne has thrown for 1,964 yards with Asaad Waseem catching for 652 yards and Fame Ijeboi rushing for 588. Maryland's Malik Washington is right behind him at 1,805 passing yards, with Chris Durr Jr. hauling in 638 receiving yards and DeJuan Williams adding 338 on the ground.

Both offenses can move the ball. Neither defense can stop anybody from doing it back. Purdue allows 32.1 points per game and Maryland allows 31.6, and the recent results confirm the profiles: Purdue hung 41 on Minnesota in a win, then surrendered 38 to Washington and 31 at Penn State. Maryland lost 37-30 to Rutgers and 20-17 at Illinois, competitive games where the offense did enough and the defense did not.

The talent gap between these rosters is negligible, which makes the home-field tax the entire argument for Purdue's price. Ross-Ade Stadium in November, for a 3-5 team going nowhere, is not the fortress that tax usually assumes. Maryland has been the more competitive team lately in defeat, losing its last two by seven and three points, and that profile, a live underdog that keeps games close, is the side getting 6.5 points in a game with a total of 57.5.

Key Factors

The total tells the real story. At 57.5, the market expects a shootout, and shootouts are where underdog covers live, because every Maryland touchdown forces Purdue to answer rather than sit on a lead. Washington and Durr have been productive against better defenses than this one, and Purdue's secondary has been the weakest link on a weak unit all season.

The strongest counter is Washington's decision-making under pressure, which has cost Maryland in its losses: if the Terrapins gift Purdue short fields, the Boilermakers' offense is good enough to convert them and stretch a margin that its defense then only has to mostly protect. Maryland's own defense offers Purdue the same gift in reverse, though, which is the point. Browne will score. Ijeboi will find room.

The question is whether Purdue can score so much more than Maryland that 6.5 points of cushion disappears, and nothing in a season of 32.1 points allowed per game suggests a runaway. Purdue's defense rarely gets the stop that ends the argument, and home favorites with that profile need everything to go right for four quarters. Maryland loses close, week after week, and that profile is gold for a road underdog. The back door stays open all afternoon in West Lafayette, and Washington is good enough to walk through it.

Our Pick
Maryland +6.5 (-110)

Neither defense in this game can be trusted to protect a lead, and Purdue has been a shaky home favorite all season. Maryland's passing game is the most reliable unit taking the field, and in a game priced for points, the underdog with the better quarterback situation keeps the back door wide open. Take Maryland +6.5 at -110.
