How they got here

Milwaukee arrives rested and rolling. The Brewers swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS, winning the four games 2-1, 7-4, 6-2 and 6-4, and the pitching staff has allowed 21 runs across 8 postseason games: a 2.03 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP and a .183 opponent batting average. The sweep ended on October 15, so Milwaukee will have had a full week to line everything up, starting with ace Jacob Misiorowski, who is confirmed to start Game 1.

Tampa Bay took the longer road. The Rays beat the Cleveland Guardians in six games in the ALCS and closed it out on October 19, winning Game 6 by 7-3, and they did it the way they have won all year, with run prevention: a 2.59 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP through 9 postseason games, with opponents hitting .201. The price of six games is a shorter runway. Tampa Bay gets three off days before Game 1, and the club has not yet announced its Game 1 starter.

The matchup, by the numbers

Over 162 games Milwaukee was the best team in baseball: 103-59, a plus-214 run differential and 832 runs scored, 5.1 per game. The lineup produces by accumulation rather than around one star. Jake Bauers posted an .873 OPS with 26 home runs, Jackson Chourio hit .291 with 25 homers and 23 steals, Brice Turang drove in 100 runs, and catcher William Contreras added 94 RBI. On the mound the Brewers paired a 3.51 ERA with a .221 opponent average, and Misiorowski is the headline act: 16-5 with a 1.80 ERA, a 0.80 WHIP and 252 strikeouts in 174.2 innings.

Tampa Bay counters with rotation depth and the stingier staff numbers. Drew Rasmussen went 16-5 with a 2.67 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP, Nick Martinez won 15 games and led the staff at 180.0 innings, and the Rays posted the better WHIP of the two staffs, 1.14 against 1.18, while converting 58 saves against 19 blown. The lineup owns the biggest bat in the series: Junior Caminero hit 42 home runs with 101 RBI and an .884 OPS, Yandy Diaz batted .293, and Jonathan Aranda added 22 homers and 92 RBI. Tampa Bay scored 736 runs, 96 fewer than Milwaukee, so its path runs through low scores: hold the Brewers lineup down and hand close games to the bullpen late.

The venue split is real. Both clubs went 55-26 at home this season, but Milwaukee was the stronger road team, 48-33 against Tampa Bay's 43-38, and the Brewers hold home field for Games 1, 2, 6 and 7 on the strength of the better record. The middle three games sit under the Tropicana Field roof, where Tampa Bay's staff has been at its best all October.
