No. 20 in the AP Top 25, Boise State brings a 7-1 record and one of the Mountain West's most productive rushing attacks into Fort Collins. Colorado State answers the only way it knows how, by turning every Saturday into a shootout and daring the favorite to keep pace for four quarters.

The Matchup

Boise State's identity is no mystery. Dylan Riley has run for 1,049 yards, and the Broncos score 35.9 points per game because defenses eventually break against that ground volume. Maddux Madsen has thrown for 1,681 yards and mostly stays out of the way of the run game's best work, finding Rasean Jones, who has 554 receiving yards, when coverage creeps toward the line.

Boise State has won three straight, including a 46-45 escape against Texas State that showed what happens when the Broncos get dragged into somebody else's kind of game. Colorado State lives in that kind of game permanently. The Rams score 35.5 points per game and allow a staggering 42.4, the profile of a team that treats defense as a rumor.

Hauss Hejny has thrown for 1,138 yards, Mel Brown leads the rushing attack with 454 yards, and RJ Vick has 425 receiving yards, and together they produce enough to hang 56 on San Diego State one week and lose 66-27 at Texas State in another. The total for this game is 68.5 because the market understands what Colorado State games become. Boise State will score. The only real question is whether Colorado State's offense or its defense does more damage to the Rams' chances.

Key Factors

The cover math runs through Colorado State's defense, and everyone involved knows it. The Rams have allowed 66, 49 and 31 points across their last three games, so Boise State's path to a rout is straightforward: hand the ball to Riley, let the margin build, and let Madsen throw only when the situation is comfortable. If the Broncos get up three scores early, Hejny will be chasing against a defense that allows 23.6 points per game, and that is not a chase Colorado State is built to finish.

The Rams' counter is volume and stubbornness. Colorado State's offense has kept producing even in its worst losses, scoring 27 at Texas State in a blowout and 49 in the win over San Diego State, and a home crowd plus a ranked visitor is exactly the spot where a loose team plays its freest half of the season. Boise State also has to travel and play at altitude against an opponent with nothing to protect.

The honest risk for the underdog is a repeat of the Utah State game, a flat 31-14 loss where the offense never arrived. But in a game priced for fireworks, the home team with a real offense getting more than two touchdowns has the friendlier arithmetic. Colorado State does not need to defend Boise State. It needs to keep trading.

Our Pick
Colorado State +17.5 (-110)

Boise State is the better team and should win, but Colorado State's offense scores too reliably for a spread this large in a game with a total in the high sixties. The Rams will give up points in bunches, and they will answer in bunches, and that exchange rate keeps the back door open all night in Fort Collins. Take Colorado State +17.5 at -110.

Score Projection
