Las Vegas visits a 6-1 San Francisco team at Levi's Stadium, fresh off a wild win at the Jets, in a game with one of the highest totals on the board.

The Matchup

San Francisco should win this game, and that is not really the argument. The argument is whether the 49ers win it by enough to put a flawed but explosive Las Vegas offense away, and the Raiders passing game makes that harder than the records suggest. Kirk Cousins has thrown for 2,124 yards with 19 touchdowns and 5 interceptions for Las Vegas, and Brock Bowers has 41 catches for 547 yards and 5 touchdowns.

That pair is the whole case in miniature. The Raiders average 273.1 passing yards per game and 27.6 points per game, and they just put up 38 points in a 38-33 win at the New York Jets in Week 8. They will give up points, but they answer them, and a team that answers scores is a hard team to bury by double digits.

San Francisco is cleaner in almost every team category. The 49ers average 28.1 points per game and allow only 19.9 points per game, compared with Las Vegas allowing 28.8 points per game. They run for 127.4 yards per game at 4.7 yards per carry, they convert 50.0 percent of third downs, and Christian McCaffrey has 84 carries for 389 yards and 8 touchdowns. That rushing efficiency is the weakness Las Vegas has to survive.

The Raiders allow too much and score just enough, which is a volatile mix. If San Francisco dictates with the run and finishes drives, the Raiders will spend the afternoon chasing. The 49ers do it without Brandon Aiyuk, who is out for personal reasons, and without De'Zhaun Stribling, who is on injured reserve with an ankle injury. Losing Aiyuk removes a separator on the outside and makes the San Francisco passing game more dependent on structure than on one on one wins.

Las Vegas has its own defensive depth problem. Patrick Johnson is on injured reserve with a neck injury, Carter Runyon is on injured reserve with a foot injury, Keyron Crawford is on injured reserve with an ankle injury, and Chigozie Anusiem is on injured reserve with a knee injury. That list helps explain why the Raiders have allowed 230 points in eight games. They are thin where a long afternoon at Levi's Stadium will test them most.

And yet the turnover numbers lean their way in a way that matters for a spread this big. Las Vegas has 13 takeaways against 8 giveaways for a plus 5 differential, while San Francisco has 7 takeaways against 10 giveaways. A single takeaway does not just stop a 49ers drive. It steals the margin the favorite needs to cover.

Key Factors

McCaffrey against a Raiders front that is missing bodies is the matchup San Francisco will test first. If the 49ers run at 4.7 yards per carry the way they have all season, they will not need to throw into obvious coverage and they can keep Cousins off the field for long stretches.

Las Vegas runs for only 77.2 yards per game at 3.0 yards per carry, so the Raiders cannot answer with the same ball control. Their path is pace and passing volume, hitting Bowers in the middle of the field and forcing San Francisco to tackle in space. That style can look ragged for a quarter and then produce two quick touchdowns, which is exactly the profile that frustrates a big favorite.

The favorite case is strong and it should be stated plainly. San Francisco is 6-1, allows 19.9 points per game, converts half its third downs, and faces a defense that allows 28.8 points per game and just gave up 33 to the Jets. If the 49ers play a clean game, protect the ball, and let McCaffrey finish in the red zone where he already has 8 rushing touchdowns, they can win by two touchdowns without doing anything spectacular.

It falls short as a covering case because it requires that clean game for four quarters. The 49ers have more giveaways than takeaways, they lost 29-20 to Atlanta in Week 7, and they are missing Aiyuk as an easy answer when Las Vegas loads the box. One stalled stretch or one Cousins and Bowers drive in the fourth quarter is enough to keep Las Vegas inside the number even in a comfortable San Francisco win.

The counterpoint that beats this pick is an early avalanche. If San Francisco scores on its first three drives, forces Las Vegas into obvious passing downs, and turns the Raiders one dimensional run game into a liability, Cousins will have to throw into a set defense and the mistakes will come.

A 17 point halftime lead that grows because Las Vegas cannot run or stop the run would leave the Raiders chasing cheap points against prevent coverage that tackles everything in bounds. That script is entirely possible with this talent gap. It just asks a team that has not been dominant for four straight quarters to be dominant here, against an offense that has scored 30 against Buffalo and 38 against the Jets in the last three weeks.

Our Pick
Raiders +10 (-110)

San Francisco is the better team at home, but Las Vegas has the passing game to answer scores and keep this from turning into a runaway. In a high scoring game, that ability to trade points matters late. Take the Raiders +10.
