UConn opens at No. 4 with a rebuilt backcourt and no Solo Ball, laying 38.5 points against a Gardner-Webb team that won four games last season. Even adding last season's per-game margins together does not reach this spread, and none of UConn's three exhibition wins came close to it either.

The Matchup

UConn is a 38.5-point favorite over Gardner-Webb at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford on Monday night, with a total of 147.5 and no moneyline posted. It is the season opener for both teams, on Peacock. Neither team has played a game that counts, so last season is the starting point.

UConn finished 34-6, scoring 76.6 points per game and allowing 65.2. Gardner-Webb finished 4-29, scoring 68.1 and allowing 85.5. Those are last season's numbers, and both rosters look different now. UConn lost Alex Karaban and Tarris Reed Jr., both first-round picks in the 2026 NBA Draft, and Gardner-Webb brings 11 new players.

The Huskies still have the best player in the building. Senior guard Silas Demary Jr. was named the Big East preseason player of the year, and forward Nik Khamenia scored 39 points with 25 rebounds across UConn's three exhibition games.

Sophomore guard Braylon Mullins missed the first two exhibitions with an injury, then made his debut against Purdue on Tuesday and finished with 7 points and 4 assists in 24 minutes. But veteran guard Solo Ball is out indefinitely. He had offseason wrist surgery, and UConn opens its season without him.

Gardner-Webb's best news is that its one proven scorer stayed. Guard Jacob Hudson was a co-leading scorer last season at 10.7 points per game with 4.0 rebounds, and he is the only one of last season's top six who returns.

Senior guard Ace Talbert is back too after averaging 6.9 points and making 34 three-pointers last season, and guard Seth Brown arrives from Fresno Pacific, where he averaged 13.6 points and made the All-PacWest second team. It is a thin group by UConn's standards, picked ninth in the Big South preseason poll, but it is not an empty one. A spread this size does not ask Gardner-Webb to win the game. It asks the Bulldogs to keep scoring.

Key Factors

Last season's margins do not get to 38.5. UConn outscored its opponents by 11.4 points per game last season. Gardner-Webb was outscored by 17.4 per game. Put the two together and the gap between these teams last season was about 29 points a night, before any edge for playing at home in Hartford. The spread asks for 38.5. That is nearly 10 points beyond the full distance between last season's two teams, and it asks a rebuilt UConn team to find those extra points in its first game that counts.

October did not close that gap. UConn won all three of its exhibitions, beating Syracuse by 20, Michigan State by 8 and Purdue by 23, and its shooting ran cold in the last one, 6 of 21 from three against Purdue. The scoring environment points the same way.

Gardner-Webb games averaged 153.6 points last season and UConn games averaged 141.8, so a total of 147.5 fits a game in the 140s. In a game played in the 140s, a favorite needs almost everything to go right for 40 minutes to win by 39, including the final minutes, when a settled result usually means bench players on both sides.

The honest counterpoint is Gardner-Webb's defense, because it was bad enough last season to make any number feel reachable. A team that allowed 85.5 points per game and lost every road game it played can lose this one by 45 if UConn's starters stay aggressive and Hudson gets no help.

Demary is a physical guard who can break a thin backcourt down, and Khamenia's exhibition form says UConn will live around the rim. If Gardner-Webb turns the ball over early and the building gets loud, this pick is in trouble by halftime. The bet is that 38.5 is simply more than an opener usually holds, even one this lopsided on paper.

Our Pick
Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs +38.5 (-110)

UConn is the better team by a wide margin, and nobody is arguing otherwise. The question is the size of the win in a first game that counts, with a new backcourt, no Solo Ball, and a favorite that never won an October game by anything close to this number. Gardner-Webb has just enough returning scoring to keep playing late. Take the points: Gardner-Webb +38.5 at -110.
