Oklahoma City defends like the best team in the league and is favored like one too. The catch is scoring. The Thunder win with stops, and stops alone rarely build the kind of margin this number demands, especially against a point guard who keeps creating long after a game looks decided.

The Matchup

Oklahoma City is the right favorite at Paycom Center, and the only argument in this game is the size of the number. The Thunder are 2-0 after scoring 106.0 points per game and allowing 94.0, a +12.0 differential built almost entirely on defense. The Clippers are 1-1 with a strong profile of their own, scoring 119.0 and allowing 110.5 for a +8.5 mark.

Last season confirms Oklahoma City as the better team without turning this into a mismatch. The Thunder finished 64-18 at +11.1 and the Clippers finished 42-40 at +1.2. DraftKings makes Oklahoma City a 15.5-point favorite with a total of 224.5 and a -1,350 moneyline.

The Thunder do not need a huge night from their star to win, which is part of the problem for anyone laying this many points. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 32 points at San Antonio in the opener and then managed 17 against Denver on Thursday, and Oklahoma City won both games anyway.

Jalen Williams scored 21 points against Denver and Chet Holmgren is averaging 12 rebounds, so the support is real. What the Thunder have not done yet is score freely, and a favorite that wins on stops has to keep getting them for a full game to run away from anybody.

The Clippers arrive short-handed and have been that way all season. Brandon Ingram is out after right heel surgery and Bradley Beal is out with right knee injury management, and neither has played a minute this season. Max Strus is out with a torn right plantar fascia, Yanic Konan Niederhauser is out after Lisfranc surgery and Jordan Miller is out after rotator cuff surgery.

The group that built the Clippers' early numbers is the group that takes the floor tonight. Oklahoma City's report is shorter and lighter. Nikola Topic is out after low back surgery, Thomas Sorber is out after knee surgery and Otega Oweh is out and not with the team, and none of the three was part of the Thunder rotation.

Key Factors

The actual gap between these teams is 3.5 points of early differential, a real edge for Oklahoma City and nowhere near what a spread this large requires. For the Thunder to cover, their defense has to hold a good Clippers offense near its floor for four quarters, and their own scoring has to cooperate at the other end.

One schedule detail works against that. This is the first night of a back-to-back for Oklahoma City, and a coach protecting a comfortable lead with another game tomorrow has every reason to shorten his starters' night, which is exactly when a big underdog number gets protected.

Darius Garland is the Clipper who protects it. He scored 30 points against Sacramento in the opener and 26 points with six assists against the Lakers on Friday, and he is comfortable dribbling into a set defense and finding the two or three late baskets that kill a blowout cover. Brook Lopez gave Los Angeles a second scoring source with 22 points off the bench on Friday, so Oklahoma City cannot load up on Garland alone. The counterpoint is turnovers.

The Clippers gave the ball away more than two dozen times against the Lakers, and Oklahoma City turns mistakes into points faster than anyone. The Thunder also allowed 107.9 points per game last season, so this defense was elite long before this week. If Garland coughs it up early and the Thunder turn this into a transition game, the margin can get there. If he takes care of the ball, the Clippers have enough scoring to stay inside a number built for a rout.

Our Pick
LA Clippers +15.5 (-105)

Oklahoma City should win this game, and that was never the question. The question is whether a team that wins with defense builds a blowout margin on the first night of a back-to-back, against a point guard who keeps creating late and a bench that can score. We have Oklahoma City by 5.6 at home. Take LA Clippers +15.5 at -105.
