Washington is 2-2 with a real offense for the first time in years, built around Trae Young throwing passes to Anthony Davis. Cleveland is favored by double digits at home anyway, mostly on reputation. The gap between what these teams were last season and what they are now is the whole argument.

The Matchup

Cleveland is 2-1 in name and uneven in practice. The Cavaliers score 119.3 points per game this season and allow 120.0, which is not the profile of a team laying double digits. Donovan Mitchell leads Cleveland at 26.7 points per game, James Harden runs the offense at 7.0 assists per game, and Evan Mobley anchors the back line at 9.3 rebounds per game. Last season's 52-30 team earned the benefit of the doubt. This season's defense has not earned it yet.

Washington is 2-2, and the shape of the team changed completely over the summer. The Wizards score 114.3 points per game and allow 114.5, and the offense runs through Trae Young, who leads the team at 11.0 assists per game. Anthony Davis is his finisher, leading Washington at 22.8 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. The Wizards won 17 games last season, and that team is gone. This one has two stars who have both carried playoff offenses.

Washington is short-handed underneath the stars. AJ Dybantsa is out tonight with a sprained left ankle, Justin Champagnie is out with a right foot injury, and Tristan Vukcevic is out with a pinched nerve in his left hip. Cleveland lists no players on its injury report. DraftKings makes Cleveland a 10.5-point favorite at Rocket Arena, with a total of 239.5.

Key Factors

Young against Cleveland's drop coverage decides how long Washington hangs around. Harden and Mitchell are scorers first, and neither chases a small guard over screens for 35 minutes. Young will get into the lane, and when Mobley steps up, Davis is rolling behind him. Washington does not need to stop Cleveland to stay inside this number. The Wizards need their two-man game to keep producing ordinary, efficient possessions, and it has all month.

Cleveland's own offense is the counterweight. Mitchell can score on anybody Washington puts on him, and the Cavaliers' 119.3 points per game came against real defenses. If this turns into a pure scoring race, Cleveland has more shooters and the home crowd. The question the spread asks is not who wins. It is whether a team allowing 120.0 a night builds a margin and then holds it against an offense that does not stop coming.

The last five minutes favor the underdog's shape. A favorite protecting a big lead stops attacking, and Washington's stars play heavy minutes in close games and in blowouts alike. Davis at the rim and Young at the line are exactly the players who shave a 14-point lead to 8 without the favorite doing anything wrong.

Our Pick
Washington Wizards +10.5 (-115)

Cleveland should win this game, but the price asks the Cavaliers to blow out a Washington team that scores with anybody and has two stars who keep possessions alive late. Young creating for Davis is a hard offense to run away from, and double digits is a lot to ask of a favorite that has defended this loosely. Take the Washington Wizards +10.5 at -115.
