Boston has won four straight and scores like it, but the Celtics have played almost all of it at home and their one road game is their one loss. Orlando just won at Toronto without Paolo Banchero, and a shorthanded Magic team that can score 121 on the road is a different problem than its 2-3 record suggests.

The Matchup

Boston is the hottest team on this slate, and the numbers are not subtle about it. The Celtics are 4-1, they score 120.8 points per game and allow 111.6, and they closed October by beating Chicago 125-111 at home on Friday. Jayson Tatum and Paul George give Boston two wings who can create their own shot, and Payton Pritchard and Derrick White keep the ball moving around them. This is a deeper and more settled team than the one that went 56-26 last season, and last season already set a high bar.

Orlando is 2-3, and the record comes with a missing piece in the middle of it. Paolo Banchero is out for this game. He sprained his right ankle, and he is not expected back until November 22. Jalen Suggs is out with a knee injury, with a return expected around November 10, and Jonathan Isaac is out with a knee injury on the same timeline.

That is the Magic's best player, its starting guard and its best defensive forward, all gone at once. What is left still functions. Desmond Bane and Franz Wagner carry the creation, Wendell Carter Jr. anchors the middle, and Orlando proved the shape works on Friday, winning 121-114 at Toronto with Banchero already sidelined.

The Magic score 109.8 points per game and allow 118.4, and that second number is the honest worry in this matchup. Orlando went 45-37 last season, so this slow start is not who this roster is at full strength.

DraftKings makes Boston a 6.5-point road favorite at Kia Center, with the Celtics at -258 on the moneyline and a total of 222.5.

Key Factors

Boston's road form is a blank page so far, and that matters more than it usually would. The Celtics are 4-0 at home and 0-1 on the road, with the loss at Detroit in their opener, so everything glowing about this start happened in their own building. Orlando is a hard first real road test. The crowd is loud, the Magic play physically, and a favorite that has lived on home shooting splits can look ordinary for a half in a place like this.

Orlando's defense is where Boston will try to end this argument early. The Magic allow 118.4 points per game, and without Isaac and Suggs they have lost the two defenders who made their length a problem on the perimeter. Tatum and George will hunt switches, and if Orlando cannot keep Boston out of the paint without fouling, the favorite can build the kind of lead that buries a home underdog.

Mitchell Robinson is day-to-day for Boston with a rest listing and a return date of November 1. Keep an eye on whether Robinson plays before placing a bet, because his minutes change how Boston protects the rim behind its wings.

The counterweight is that Orlando's offense no longer looks lost without its star. Bane is a proven second creator, Wagner can run an offense through the frontcourt, and 121 points at Toronto says the ball still finds scorers. A total of 222.5 expects a reasonably open game, and an open game at home gives the underdog more possessions to answer with. Boston should win this game more often than not. Winning it by seven or more, on the road, against a team that has already learned how to play short, is a bigger ask.

Our Pick
Orlando Magic +6.5 (-112)

Orlando is shorthanded and still dangerous at home, and Boston has not yet had to prove this scoring on the road. The Magic have already won a hard road game without Banchero, and this spread asks Boston to win big in a building where it has not played yet this season. Take the Orlando Magic +6.5 at -112.
