The New York Jets head to Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday to face a Kansas City team that has lost two straight. The Jets are 2-6 and have lost three in a row, but each of those defeats came by one score.

The Matchup

The most interesting thing about this game is how ordinary Kansas City has looked trying to score lately. The Chiefs average 23.9 points per game, yet they scored 3 points in a loss at Seattle in Week 7 and followed it with a 28 to 24 loss to Denver. The Jets, for all their problems at 2-6, keep losing close.

Their last three defeats are 38 to 33 against Las Vegas, 28 to 25 against Miami and 26 to 19 against New England. That profile matters at Arrowhead. A favorite that is not pulling away from teams lately is a shaky bet to win by double digits, even at home.

Geno Smith gives the Jets a steadier hand than most 2-6 teams have. Smith has 1,913 yards with 12 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions, and Garrett Wilson has 43 catches for 527 yards and 3 touchdowns. Kansas City's secondary is thinned out in a way that helps that pair.

Mansoor Delane is out with a shoulder injury at cornerback, and L'Jarius Sneed is on injured reserve with a knee injury at cornerback. The Chiefs have only 9 sacks as a team, so Smith may get more time than a road underdog usually gets in this building.

The Jets' own injury list is the hard part of this case and it should not be softened. Breece Hall is out with a quadriceps injury at running back, which removes the Jets' best way to slow the game down. Max Mitchell is out with a concussion at tackle, Joseph Ossai is out with an ankle injury at defensive end, David Bailey is out with a groin injury at linebacker, and T'Vondre Sweat is on injured reserve with a knee injury at defensive tackle.

Kansas City will test all of that with Kenneth Walker III, who has 141 carries for 770 yards and 6 touchdowns for a rushing attack averaging 134.1 yards per game at 5.1 yards per carry. Peter Woods is questionable with a neck injury at defensive tackle for the Chiefs. Keep an eye on whether Peter Woods plays before placing a bet.

Key Factors

Kansas City's running game against a Jets front missing Ossai, Bailey and Sweat is the matchup the Chiefs will lean on. If Walker gets the Chiefs into short third downs all afternoon, Arrowhead does the rest and the margin grows steadily.

The Jets' counter is Smith protecting the ball the way he has all season and Wilson winning enough against a depleted secondary to answer scores and stop any runaway before it starts. New York allows 23.5 points per game, not great and not disastrous, which fits a game that stays within reach.

The favorite case is real. Kansas City is 5-2, allows 18.7 points per game, gains 390.6 yards per game and has the better rushing attack by a wide margin, especially with Hall out for the Jets. At home, that package usually covers a big number against a 2-6 team.

It falls short here because the Chiefs' recent form points the other way. Two straight losses and a 3-point outing at Seattle are not the profile of a team piling up margin right now, and the Jets have played three straight one-score losses rather than getting blown out.

What beats this pick is Walker taking the game over early. If Kansas City runs for chunk gains against that thinned Jets front, builds a two-score lead, and forces a Hall-less Jets offense to throw into a loud Arrowhead, Smith's careful season can unravel in one loud quarter. The Chiefs winning the line of scrimmage from the first drive and turning this into a chase is how the Jets lose by two touchdowns.

Our Pick
Jets +9.5 (-110)

Kansas City is the better team but has not been scoring like a runaway favorite lately, and the Jets keep finding ways to stay in games to the end. Take the Jets +9.5.
